People who read this book are forced to consider the exceedingly difficult issues regarding survival, morality, and the nature of humanity as they are opened to the unimaginable horrors of the Holocaust through Levi's personal story and his experiences as a Jewish Italian prisoner in the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. Food was a vital source of living in these conditions, from working early in the morning in the hot sun to working late at night with little to no breaks, if you did something wrong or messed up, you were beaten. The food was nutritious but hard to come by. Prisoners got desperate and would trade their shirts for food, these actions were although prohibited and if prisoners were caught without wearing a shirt under their jacket, they would be beaten but would also end up with a new shirt. Behind all the negativity, however, Levi talks about the surprising acts of love and compassion that the inmates display despite the misery they are all going through. These small acts of kindness, whether they be giving words of support or sharing scarce food, are little sparks of hope in the harsh environment they live in every day. Levi and his fellow prisoners never gave up hope, even with the terrible circumstances that they were in.
