Mantsios states that Americans don’t like to talk about different social classes for one of two reasons: class distinctions are irrelevant or they are uncertain that the reality of class difference makes an impact on their life. It has become culturally unacceptable to place people in different social classes for it causes too much diversity (Colombo 370). Consequently, Gregory Mantsios is well qualified to write this article. For over 30 years he worked in higher education; mainly he established college degree programs for nontraditional students (“Gregory Mantsios”).
While reading the article, it is easy to see how the author establishes main points about race playing a key role in inadequate funding and opportunities for certain school systems. Darling- Hammond emphasizes that
“Where The Boys Aren’t- The Gap On College Campuses” When reading this article by Melana Zyla Vickers the reader’s first impression is to assume that just by the title “Where The Boys Aren’t- The Gap On College Campuses” that the article is about pro-feminism. This is not the case, Vickers makes the point that males are not getting the same education as females, she calls attention to why males are not being taught to Value College. Vickers shows, "At colleges across the country 58 women will enroll as freshmen for every 42 men. As the class of 2010 proceeds toward graduation the male numbers dwindle”.
The American dream is a dream of a land in which one can prosper with ambition and hard work. This idea has created many illusions for some because in reality the American dream is proven to be something that is rarely achieved. No individual is guaranteed success or destined for failure, but it is apparent that women, people of color, and those born into poverty will face greater obstacles than others, despite being a greater part of the American population. An author that tackles the issue of class in the United States is Gregory Mantsios. In his essay, “Class in America-2009”, Mantsios aims to prove that class affects people’s lives in drastic ways.
Race, gender, and class, while commonly thought of as separate, are deeply intertwined with one-another. In his book Iron Cages, Ronald Takaki explores and lays out both the ways in which these three connected the ways they are not and the underlying reasons as to why. Following will be the analysis of the three in pairs, so as to better break down the comparisons among the three in relation to one another, concluded with the intersection of all three. Beginning with race and gender, it goes without says that masculinity was emphasized when referring to peoples of color, and femininity was emphasized when referring to white people. In James W. Loewen’s “The Land of Opportunity,” he states that social class affects the way children are raised. He discusses the inequality in today’s society and how the textbooks in high school do not give any social class information. The students in today’s time are not taught everything they should be taught. He states that your family’s wealth is what makes up your future. Loewen discusses that people with more money can study for the SATs more productively and get a better score than someone who has less money.
In the autobiography Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez the author employs the theme of higher education to defend his views on affirmative action. He shares his views and experiences on the issue as a minority alienated in a majority white American society in the 1960’s-70’s. Although he was a well–educated Mexican American, his ethnicity classified him as a minority. In college, despite being anti-affirmative action, Rodriguez still reaped the benefits of affirmative action. He believed that affirmative action should not be not be determined by race, but student’s intellectual ability to complete college.
Jean Anyon and Robin Mark 's articles share and talk about the same points, which are relates to social class (socioeconomic status) in higher education. ' 'The Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work ' ' by Anyon , claimed that schools in wealthy communities are better than schools in poor communities. She observed five elementary schools over the course of a year, in different economic environments which teach students in different ways in each of these schools depending on their the social status. According to Jean, there are four different rating of schools like, working-class schools, middle-class schools, affluent professional schools, and executive elite schools. (Jean , 170)
The social institution of education maintains inequalities through the demonstration of two of our assign readings. First, the reading Missing in Interaction by Myra and David Sadker is an essay that was based on how segregation exists in the classrooms and the impact it has on both boy and girls (Ore, 2011b; 305). Their main argument is that sexism occurs in the classroom without the teachers realizing it. Teachers tend to focus more on the boys than girls when a class discussion begins. There are two examples within this essay that demonstrates this.
While Mrs. Moran is considering the socioeconomic status of Tyrel’s family, she should also be considering how gender, language differences, and family dynamics affect Tyrel. M. Baruth and L. Manning suggests that African American males tend to need an alternative education to address individual needs (2013). Taking time to know the individual student and his needs should be a major priority. Language differences may also create a barrier in Tyrel’s education. If parents are non-readers or undereducated, then the meaning of many words he may hear in a learning environment will differ dramatically from the words he is exposed to at home.
The difference between the two authors is that Edmundson bases his findings on his experience with privileged students and then applies it to a whole nation of young adults; meanwhile, Shorris writes about his experiences with impoverished young adults, but he doesn’t apply his results to the entire nation. Edmundson is speaking too generally when he says that the generation of his students is passionless, that they cannot benefit from a liberal education, and that they are all going to school as consumers. In contrast with Edmundson’s students, Shorris’ students were changed; this shows that not every group of students is the same as Edmundson’s students. Shorris’ essay gives another side to the story that Edmundson tells; although Shorris’ argument doesn’t totally invalidate Edmundson’s, it does limit
