The Nightjohn movie was very different from the book. One reason that it was so different is because of how much the Wallers are talked about. In the book they only talk about the Wallers when slaves are being punished. In the movie, they were shown much more. The Wallers don’t have kids in the book.

The book, “Celia, A Slave,” is a true story written by Melton A. McLaurin and published by the University of Georgia Press in 1991. McLaurin was an educator at the University of South Alabama where he served several years as Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs before retiring. He is known for writing several articles and books about the American South and race relations. He wrote this book specifically about slavery and how women and men or blacks and whites were divided. Whites were superior in the United States.
It is this determination that makes the book hard to put down, as I was anxious to discover just how, in fact, she ultimately managed to escape her hellish life with no money, eight children, and suspicious sister-wives watching her every move. I finished Escape a few days ago and felt a little confused about my feelings over this book. I even mentioned this in a phone conversation with another writer-friend. The story is compelling.

Most of the information is presented in a recessive way rather than a factual statement. Meaning that instead of the author coming out and stating an event or factual evidence they present it in a way that forces the reader to look for it, this is done because some information may not be needed by anyone, someone, or everyone. Lots of information in this book was useful to me in many ways. Reading the story about Melinda has shown me that sometimes, people just need someone to talk to. That even though people may act fine and seem fine they may be very distanced from true happiness because of something that happened in there past, and if they do not have someone that will listen to them then they may allow it to define their future, but, if someone is willing to just listen to them, then they may be able to get past the traumatic event(s) that they are letting define them.
The plot, the setting, the characters were all wonderful, but the three things that caught my attention were the accuracy of events, heart-racing events, and the plot. Throughout the book, events during the jail or courthouse were described very detailed and produced a clear image in my head. The author must have done lots of prior research in order to get information about these events that most commoners do not know. The fire, rape, fights were described in a manner that allowed me to truly experience and understand what it was like in the character’s shoes. The plot went through many situations from jail cells all the way to getting confidential information from the Pentagon.
I’ll start of with the supporting characters in the book, one word: overdramatic. Drama isn’t always my cup of tea and this book and its characters seem to love it, or that is what I felt sometimes (Maybe I’m the overdramatic one right now). For example; Melindas ex-bestfriends started ignoring her after she called the police during a party and that is relatively exaggerated to a certain degree, I get that someone would get mad but if you really are bestfriends then it wouldn’t be a problem to try to understand the situation and try to make up.
The fact that she can walk away from all those terrible experiences with love for her parents is incredible. Another thing I loved about this book is how it represents her parents, with all their faults, and their poor mentality, at its worst, without anger, or really any judgment, just with the love. If she had been bitter in her description it would not have been as amazing. What I didn’t really like about it, was the lack of development for their relationship. To me, it seemed that she hated his guts, then boom! He says he is able to break her mother’s curse which makes her already attracted to him. I believe the author could’ve had the two slowly open up to each other, and maybe include a few awkward moments that shows the development of their love for each other. Despite the minor setback, I could not contain my excitement and muffled my squeals with a pillow.
It 's a jaw-dropping book that will leave you wanting more as the author Laurie writes in a crisp and clear way describing the young girl Melinda’s horrific story and how it unfolds. The author 's tone gives off the vibe of a young frighted girl which I find really enhances this sad, but exhilarating story. This story taught me to always speak up for myself and to never let anyone take advantage of me. I would recommend this novel because it is extremely detailed, painting vivid pictures in your mind that really help to magnify and
Susie is the main character, she is murdered at the age of 13 and the book is her watching her family and friends deal with her death well they try to find the murderer. well susies in heaven she doesn't actually like all that much she wishes she could be back on earth growing up with her family, well in heaven she wonders “Heavens where a girl like me didn't fit in. Where they horrific, these other heavens? worse than feeling so solitary among ones living, growing peers?”(119).
