“The Danger of a Single Story” To start, we are introduced to Chimamanda Adichie who is a Nigerian novelist and public speaker. She gives us a Ted Talk about what a “Single Story” is and how it can be dangerous. The way she speaks is addicting to listen to, the way she words what she says, and how she keeps the audience interactive is wonderful. In her Ted Talk about “The Danger of a Single Story”, she states how a “Single Story” is where there is one story and that is the only story you hear about. An example she gave was when a person specifically speaking to her roommate had a story about people from Africa. Her roommate thought, “There was no possibility of Africans being similar to her in any way, no possibility of feelings more complex than pity, no possibility of a connection as human equals” (Adichie 4:41). That one story becomes the stereotype. I agree with Adichie that they can be dangerous, especially with all the misinformation that gets spread around in today's society. When I was little I fell under the “Single Story” that Africa was broke and poor, as I have grown up I have realized that although that can be true it is also untrue, many people and cities in Africa are lavish and have good lives. I wonder if there is a certain story that other people use to define me? I don't think there is a single story that revolves around me because just like in high school, in college I don’t stick to just one group. I socialize with a lot of different people. You can’t just stick with one group when I am in multiple groups writing my story in multiple books. It is hard to categorize and make a story about someone diverse in who they are. When I think about this story that Adichie gave, the story that popped into my head was about the immigrants coming into our country because it is constantly front and center in the
