Ann Rinaldi’s novel The Fifth Of March depicts the real historical event in Boston. During 1769 to 1772, Boston once was a mad and rebellious city. One 14 year old indentured servant named Rachel Marsh served the Adam’s family because her greedy Uncle Eb sold her service to them. Rachel is a shy and lonely girl at the start then she becomes an independent girl. She came to Boston with her evil old Uncle Eb that she has problems with. The real reason she came is to find a place in the world. For the past four years, she learned the ways of a true American until, March 5th,1770 the day of the Boston massacre. The lives of five citizens were lost by British soldiers. One soldier she got to know is named Matthew Kilroy. Matthew fell madly in love with her even though it was forbidden love. Rachel had the most interesting experience in Boston while making friends but, she let that go and started a new chapter in Philadelphia without her dowry. The main event in the book is the Boston Massacre. The Main character Rachel, was based on an actual indentured servant who worked for the Adams. Almost everything that happened to Rachel was made up. All of her Relationships were made up, one was Jane. Jane acted as a sidekick for Rachel. The Author needed a way to express Rachel's thoughts to the reader. This book is is based around a real and horrific event. Characters such as Henry Knox and Matthew Kilroy were alive at this time. Uncle Eb was the antagonist of the story. He was the greedy, rotten old uncle of Rachel. In real life, Uncle Eb’s name was Ebenezer Richardson. He killed Christopher Snider during one riot.
