The Glass Castle: A Summary In The Glass Castle: A Memoir, author Jeannette Walls belongs to a family that is constantly picking up and moving. Walls learned a lot from her dysfunctional family and used their example to motivate herself, ultimately leading to success and happiness in her adult life. Some of the greatest lessons came from Walls’ alcoholic father, as he taught her who to be and demonstrated at times who not to be. She believed in him when the rest of the family couldn’t. One time, her father gave her Venus as a Christmas present. Walls was always conscious and sometimes grateful for their bond. The Walls family continued to move across the country, staying with both sets of grandparents for a time. One particularly memorable temporary home was in Battle Mountain. Here, Walls learned to swim and went to school. Of course, the family eventually had to leave and at one point wound up on the mother, Rose Mary Walls’, inherited land. The house was much larger than what the family was used to, but without a budget they quickly became impoverished. Although this living situation was the best the family had encountered, they moved to Welch, West Virginia, Rex Walls’ hometown. Welch was scorching hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter, and the Walls’ cheap house provided no insulation. The wood was rotting, there was no indoor plumbing, the electrical bill was rarely paid, and the children found most of their food in the trash cans at school. The children, Lori, Jeannette, Brian, Maureen, focused on digging a hole for the glass castle. Jeannette also occupied her time working on the school newspaper, and rapidly moved through the ranks. The living situation, however, became so bad that the hole became a dumping ground for trash and the bedroom ceiling began to leak.
