The Goophered Grapevine is written by the author Charles W. Chesnutt. This whole story is about a Yankee that wants to buy a Grape vineyard but a southern that used to work on the vineyard tells him not to buy the vineyard for multiple reasons. The story took place in a time period called the Reconstruction. There are many reasons why this short story could be said that the southern manipulates the story to make sure that the Yankee does not buy the vineyard. As a reader we do not find that out until the very end of the short story. He tells the Yankee that all of his stories are true and that he can go show them the grave of Henry to prove that he is telling the truth. This is very manipulating in many ways on Uncle Julius part. He says “ I wouldn’ ‘vise yer to buy dus yer ole vimya’d, ‘caze de opher’s on it yet, en dey ain’ no tellin’ w’en it’s gwine ter crap out.”(Chesnutt) This proves that he is trying to scare them off by saying there could still be some of the grape vines that are curse still on the vineyard that day.
