Is there a “model minority”? Takaki’s essay “The Harmful Myth of Asian Superiority” . In this essay Takaki writes against the claim that has been made that Asian Americans are viewed as being the “model minority”. He supports his thesis by using supporting data that proves this claim to be false. He also talks about the speculation that has arise due to this claim. As a result African Americans have grown to be resentful towards Asian Americans because of the two constantly being compared and set at a certain standard. Takaki proves this claim to be true and uses evidence that supports his claim. In his first argument he shows how this claim has effected politicians view on other minority groups mainly African Americans. Many politicians have asked,”If Asian Americans can make it, ….why can't African Americans”(page 117). Takaki argument is understandable and is sounds. He is basically saying how can you compared the two. African Americans have always struggled in society and have experience a lot of discrimination. He goes on to saying that many young African Americans have felt superfluous meaning that they feel like what they do is unnecessary and isn't contributing. The data that is collected are mainly from “California ,Hawaii, and New York -states with higher incomes and higher cost of living than the national average” (page 117). Here is where many Asian Americans and Caucasians live at so when data is collected these two minority groups stand out.
