No one’s villainous as Gaston. No one’s entertaining like Gaston. No one’s in love with himself as Gaston. The antagonist in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Gaston, is chosen to be the best villain of the year, making him the guest of honour at the dinner party of evil. Gaston is the most malicious antagonist of them all due to his cunning, egotistical, and manipulative nature. Gaston possesses all the qualities of a perfect villain, especially his slyness. He never loses his slick personality, even during his last moments, and has no gratitude for those who save his life. The greatest villains are those who skillfully mask their dangerous characteristics. Gaston quickly and easily convinces all the villagers to kill the Beast, a scene which illustrates his villainous traits. He delivers a speech about the dangers of the Beast, ending with the phrase, “I say we kill the Beast!” (Beauty and the Beast). Gaston is already loved by the entire town, so it was not a surprise that his speech is followed by cheers as well as the formation of a mob with new intentions of destroying the Beast. Gaston’s ability to appear as a hero to everyone and cause the villagers to support him in killing the Beast, simply to achieve his own goal of making Belle his wife, showcases his persuasiveness. After hearing Gaston speak, all the townspeople immediately lose their capability of assessing whether or not they should trust his words. Although he may be lacking intelligence, Gaston is very clever and persuasive. As well, his charismatic qualities and ability to bring people together under a common goal will be necessary for this party, especially due to everyone’s violent nature. Gaston would be able to prevent conflicts and manipulate the guests into staying calm.
