In the essay “The Iks” by Lewis Thomas, the author explains that the individual Iks’ actions and their personalities can be compared to the group of people, committee, nation, and more. He explained, in the book written by the anthropologist about the Iks, how the Iks have changed to be heartless and negative people. Lewis Thomas explains that the behavior of Ik is same as a nation and city that they steal from each other, exchange insults, and that they do many other horrible deeds to each other. For example, the nation like Japan took over Korea during World War II and they have done many other horrible and heartless deeds toward the Koreans. The Japanese forcefully took away Koreans’ names and changed them to Japanese, made the Koreans to have class in school only in Japanese, and took away the Korean traditions. Not only that they have forcefully made Koreans labor at the mines, construction sites, and etc. Moreover, they have done many experiments on the Koreans, like how Germans experimented on Jews, and forcefully took Korean women to become prostitute for Japanese soldiers. The nation Japan as a whole have destroyed the traditions of Korea and the nation itself as the individual Ik have acted toward each other with indifference. Furthermore forced labor, human experiment, and forced prostitution are barbaric acts and there are no difference from Ik whose actions are just as how the primitives would act. Japan is just one nation that I have used to give example of how Ik is similar to nation but the other nations who have conquered other nations have done similar acts like destroying the cities, stealing foods and weapons, and many other deeds. Lewis Thomas have explained that Iks insult each other, steal from each other, and defecate on each others’ door steps. Just like the individual Iks, the bullies act like heartless people. The group of bullies always steal moneys or any possessions that the bullied students have. The group of bullies also insult and humiliate the bullied students. Not only that the bullies enjoy the suffering of victim of bullies, like individual Iks who laugh at each other when the other person has “sign of misfortune” (92). Also, the Iks have become like this due to the government basically stealing their land and the anthropologists studying on them. Due to these situations, the Iks have changed negatively and the author stated that they have become like this for “defense”(93). For example, in the book by anthropologist stated that Ik has “snatched [one of the anthropologist] food, defecated on his doorstep, and hooted dislike at him” (92). The Iks have done are almost exactly what the government has done to them, such as stealing, and self-defense toward those individuals who bothers them. This is similar to why some groups of bullies became bullies. There are cases like some of the groups of students who got bullied become the group of the bullies to fight back and defend themselves so no one will ever bully them anymore.
