While reading the 5 fiction short stories there became a common pattern between 3 stories and the characters in them. These stories are “The Rocking Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence, “I Stand Here Ironing” by Tillie Olsen, and “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. Every character has the mindset to possibly fulfill their goals to better and/or change their lives. “The Rocking Horse Winner” is about a boy named Paul who wants to win his mother’s love and attention. By giving her the life she always wanted.
In the beginning of the story, Lupe had to be determined to reach her goals by practicing for all of those awards she got. For example, in the text it said she won: “Spelling bee champion 3 times in a row, blue ribbon awardee in the science fair, she is a straight-A student, and many more!” She must have had to study a lot, be responsible, and have to have stayed on top of her homework. In addition, Lupe is not good at sports, In the story it said “No matter how hard she tried she couldn’t run as fast as the other girls.”

Salva’s Survival Have you ever survived through something that may killed others, Salva had been through a lot of tough things that tried to kill him when he was traveling to Kenya. There are many factors that helped Salva survive in Sudan such as strength, leadership, and persistence. There are many ways that strength helped out Salva in ‘’A Long Walk to Water’’. Salva’s toe nail came off and he was tough to endure the pain.
She was not able to ride a bike, swim, roller skate, or even catch a pop fly. Then one day she was pouting in her room she said “I’ll never be good at sports” then a great idea clicked in her head maybe I can play marbles Lupe said. First off, one way Lupe’s practice lead to success was that she practiced hard on marbles. For example, she practiced everyday to get her aim right and her brother helped her by saying “ think eye and thumb and let it rip”. Next, she squeezed a rubber eraser one hundred times and squeezing it for an hour.
