Personality features and psychological disorders are linked to each other in various ways. The movie “What About Bob?” exemplifies this by showing how Bob Wiley’s psychological disorders affect his personality. Bob demonstrates several disorders throughout the movie, but three disorders that stand out are Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Agoraphobia, and Dependent Personality Disorder. Psychological disorders can drastically impact ones personality and make them appear abnormal to others. First, Bob shows symptoms of having Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. For example, the beginning of the movie when he is sitting in his apartment saying “I feel good, I feel great, I feel wonderful” to himself repeatedly. Bob shows evidence in the movie that he suffers from this by working from home, being scared in elevators and public places. The movie suggest that he has been in therapy for years for this, but has never been cured; this is a problem because by some point he should be making progress, but he seems to continuously be terrified of public places. Agoraphobia is one of many disorders that Bob suffers from, but another one is dependent personality disorder. Lastly, Dependent Personality Disorder is defined as a person that is terrified of being alone or abandoned. Bob’s major disorder is his Dependent Personality Disorder. Bob lacks self-confidence and decision making skills; these are depicted when he decides to act like he is Dr. Marvin’s sister and calls his office pretending to be in an emergency situation and gets Dr. Marvin’s vacation phone number.
