The black plague, also called the Black Death, began in East Asia then traveled to Europe . The disease was carried by rats & it caused fever, developed lesions, and death within a few days of having it. The citizens in Europe, at the time, were unaware of what the cause of the plague was, leading to many different responses. Europeans had reacted in various ways towards the black plague like using it as a means to collect money, strengthen beliefs, & causing deaths.
The Plague It was a dark day for Gregory Thomas, he just lost his mother to the terrible sickness that was taking over his very small village. The village he lived in had very strict rules, the King didn’t want anyone to know anything. He barley let anyone have freedom to have of their own opinions, Gregory hated that because he was a very curious child, he also hated where he lived, it smelled really bad because people used the bathroom outside and butchers would throw the parts they didn’t want outside. He just wanted to make it out and he wanted to be rich, not have to worry about anything. They lived about 30 miles away from London, in a small village.

This difference can be a window of insight into their core religious beliefs. By looking at what the Christians and Muslims thought the causes of the Black Death were, the differences in the Christian and Muslim response to the plague, and the similarities of how the two groups reacted, Muslims and Christians responded in very different ways because of their thoughts and actions to the plague that ended the lives of many.

The plague attacked and kill around 25% and 45% of the societies it touch and/or encountered. The plague was made of three bacterial strains which created the three plagues called bubonic, pneumonic, and septimic. At this time of desesperation and agony in most homes religion such as Islam and Christianity became the most powerful force in the lives of people.

Although both diseases led to drastic economic changes, they caused different overturns of religious beliefs, and only the Black Death resulted in the creation of public health services and the marginalization of groups of people. A lack of labor precipitated alterations to the economy--the end of feudalism in the case of the Black Death and the creation of the Transatlantic Slave Trade in the case of smallpox.

Nuland Kraft The Doctors Plague depicts the story of the lifeline of Ignac Semmelweis, a physician in the First Division at the Allgemeine Krankenhaus hospital in Vienna and his discovery of childbed fever. Nuland opens the medical-scientific novel with a fictional story of a young nameless girl who is inching closer to her birth date. From her friend, she learns there are two obstetric divisions, one run by doctors and the other by midwives, advising the soon to be mom to stay clear of medical students. Many factors played a key role in the extensive spread of the Black Death, or Bubonic plague, like insect bites or rodents, but the progressive trade networks were the most impactful. It started in Asia, in the 1300’s, but the new trade routes allowed it to spread across the Indian Ocean. Many people from many different backgrounds were negatively affected by this disease, and many didn’t know that they were exposed to the disease until it was too late. The Black Death had a variety of clinical forms, but no matter which type a person had, they were guaranteed death. This disease completely changed the medieval world and affected religions as well as many other ways of life or cultures.

The risk of catching the disease is even greater if you were to travel to different parts of the world. The plague is spread with contamination, with animals, human beings and more. You have the risk of coming in contact with contaminated animals or beings, such as rats and mosquitoes.

Various responses to the plague expressed different beliefs and concerns including exploitation, fear, and religious superstition. During the course of the plague these beliefs and concerns underwent change. During the outbreak of the plague fear dominated Europe, and as time passed fear became more irrational and superstitious.
It was the Spring of 1348, and the citizens of Europe were malnourished due to limited food supplies for such a large population. This made them more susceptible to the outbreak of the Black Death. The Black Death originated in Asia, then moved westward into Sicily. From Sicily, the plague crept its way up through Europe infecting millions of people, in total killing more than one third of Europe’s population. In fact, over fifty percent of the population of Siena died, along with fifty percent of Paris, eighty percent of Florence, and over two thirds of Venice.
Finally, once they are caught Annie Dillard points out; “He chased us through the backyard labyrinths of ten blocks before he caught us by our jackets. He caught us and we all stopped. We three stood staggering, half blinded, coughing, in an obscure hilltop backyard; a man in his twenties, a boy, a girl. He had released our jackets, our pursuer, our captor, our hero; He knew we weren’t going anywhere. We all played by the rules”.
