To begin with, it is extremely important that our educational system stops promoting false confidence and allowing students to unlearn their current outlook on life. Both Davidson and Twenge touch upon the flaws in the current education system. As Davidson describes, “Confidence in your ability to learn is confidence in your ability to unlearn, to switch assumptions or methods or partnerships in order to do better. This is true not only for you, as an individual, but for whole institutions” (Davidson 67). Davidson believes true confidence, allows one to not only learn important ideas, but also forsake the ideas that may harm him or her from reaching a goal; she also mentions that this notion does not apply just to an individual person, but also applies
every student has a right and a chance to reach their maximum , also to have their own expectations. Rose states that every student should be responsible for their own education but teachers should set a higher standard for students. ”Students will float to the mark you set” (Rose , page 2).Rose is an award winning author, and educational expert , but at one point he was just like every other student
On the flip side the book also enlightens the reader on how to turn success and failures into something positive that will be beneficial and help create a growth mindset in the students. The book gives great insight on growth mindset motivation and what should and should not be given as praise. A clarity in learning how to teach the growth mindset and become a growth mindset are key factors addressed. Carol Dweck depicts how easy it is to push a child into a fixed mindset, just by giving praise. Often well intended praise results in the improper form of praise and helps foster a fixed mindset in
Students not only need to gain the knowledge for the field that they will be working in, but more importantly they need the knowledge of basic life skills on how to think and react to life experiences. It is important for people to understand that knowledge is power, and knowing that it’s not all about you is one of the best realizations one can have. We are all here to collectively work together for some type of common goal. No one person is more valuable than the other. So the next time we are waiting in line in Walmart, we shouldn’t be cursing about how the cashier is too slow, or that they need to open more lines because we are in a hurry.
Society forces students to take classes in which some students might not have a slightest interest in, in the hopes of them becoming successful figures. It is more beneficial for students to take classes in which students are capable to succeed and grow rather then to to force students to sit in classes that give the students no benefits. Scott Adams writes in his article “How to Get a Real Education” about the inefficient school system, he says “is like training your cat to do your taxes”(98). Adams compares “training your cat to do your taxes” to B students in classrooms to show the readers the concept that sometimes students are not capable to do well in a class, and the time they spend in this class could be allocated better. To further his claim Adams uses himself as an example to show his readers that learning things that benefit him proved him well.
Growth or Fixed Mindset In Carol Dweck’s article “The Perils of Praise and Promise” she explains the difference between a growth and fixed mind-set. Dweck says” In a fixed mind-set, students care first and foremost about how they will be judged; smart or not smart. Repeatedly students with this mind-set reject opportunities to learn if they might make mistakes.
Praising students can relate how their intelligence can be. Some students get comfortable with their intelligence (fixed mindset) and don’t bother taking on other challenges. There are 2 types of people with 2 types of mindsets. First is Fixed mindset and the other is Growth mindset. Cleary students with a growth mindset are mature and want to find strategies.
Fixed Mindset- Believing that were born to fail at things but also we are born with intelligence and that we can grow our mind to better us in the future Growth Mindset- Believing you that anything you do has a ending either good or bad and to be able to turn it into success. We are born with nothing a good example is that if were born with nothing and we succeed it’s a good reason that we are growing our mind in a positive way and were getting stronger as a person mentally Situation- Persevere to Graduation With a growth mind set in place I have less fear of how trying classes may be.
Imagine going to school and really succeeding; you understand everything, you’re getting good grades and all the praise you can dream of from your parents and teachers. But then you move up and things get harder, you don’t understand everything, your grades are dropping and you are scared that you will no longer get that praise. You have two options, you can either take on the challenge and get back to where you used to be, or you can sit down when you feel threated by the hard work. In “Brainology” by author Carol S. Dweck, we are shown research concerning those two options or “mindsets” and how we can change them.
Everyone has ineffable difficulties in their mind. When we were children, most children learned the same things at school. But, why are their lives going in different directions? Children grow up in different families that have different family values. Students not only just study in schools, but also they learn
The diversity of student backgrounds, abilities and learning styles makes each person unique in the way he or she reacts to information. The intersection of diverse student backgrounds and active learning needs a comfortable, positive environment in which to take root. Dr. King continues by explaining, “Education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.” From back then to today’s society, kids are failing because they lack those morals that they need to succeed.
The next acronym in my philosophy is ‘A’ and it stands for acknowledge. It is important for teachers to acknowledge children for their efforts and achievements because it helps to increase children’s level of self-esteem (Clements & Schneider, 2006). Children appreciate kind words and acknowledgements from teachers therefore I need to come up with more encouraging words and phrases to motivate them to learn
First of all, society and its replicated currents of thought already push students to a position where learning is something which must happen quickly and in
INTRODUCTION Students are always experiencing threats elicited by fear they have on their minds, such as failing a major examination or beating the project 's deadline. Students often do such thing like cramming and do other reasons for them not to do their responsibilities on time. They are afraid to fail but they are lethargic to start their academic works. In other words, they intentionally hinder their performance. There are students who strive hard to avoid being identified as “stupid” by others.
These students will still develop into quitters. They will give up on everything if things do not go there way. Without a doubt the students that do not give up have a good life later down the
