The article, “The Real Causes Of Depression Have Been Discovered, And They’re Not What You Think” by Huffington Post guest writer, Johann Hari, is an opinion article in which the reporter discusses the importance of different causes of depression other than “chemical imbalances in the brain” (Hari, 2018). The article is about an individual documenting his journey of training under Dr. Vincent Felitti, a scientist, to discover “real causes of depression and anxiety” (Hari, 2018). As a teenager who has grown up listening to school presentations on social problems such as bullying, drugs, rape, and alcohol, I was not very aware that depression can also have a remarkable impact on my life. Many doctors think that depression and anxiety are insubstantial and can be resolved by prescription drugs (Hari, 2018), but little do they know that severe problems that I used to get presentations on, are caused by these insubstantial issues. However, Hari makes its clear that depression is not caused by the how the brain functions, in contrast it’s being caused by past experiences. Therefore, with many years of research, experiments, and supporting evidence this statement is being proved accurate rather than the doctor’s solution to this condition. Dr. Robert Anda, one of Dr. Felitti’s colleagues told the author, “it’s time to stop asking what’s wrong with people and time to start asking what happened to them” (Hari, 2018). If people weren’t dismissive of depression, would the history have been played out in a different way? For instance, the aggressive behaviours of Barbarians were labelled as a cultural norm; would that have been a collectively unconscious response to the social dismissal of underlying mental illnesses?
