Nathan McCall's novel "Them" (2007) focuses on gentrification and racial clash in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood, birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr, and tells a story from both a black and white persons perspective. Each side seeing the other as them people as well as being reluctant of one another. McCall lives in Atlanta, Georgia and currently teaches African American studies at Emory University. In his early years he graduated from high school and went on to attend college but was involved in armed robbery that sent him to prison for three years. After being released from prison, McCall finished college with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism.
In contrast, the narrator internalizes his feelings by repressing them as his father did after his brother passed away. As it was the relationship of their father and uncle, Sonny and his brother grew up in Harlem, a district replete with hopelessness and poverty. Yet each individual reacts to his environment in unusual ways. On the one hand, the narrator distances himself from his community in Harlem, including his brother Sonny. The narrator may love his brother but is in general judgmental of the direction of Sonny's life struggles and decisions.
This shows that their bond through storytelling has strengthened. This has a contribution in the play, because as mentioned before, this can show great character development as they both start warming up to each other and enjoy each other’s company, I personally think this is important for the reader because it can show even better how they are just 2 scared kids in a war, who deeply rely on each other, and it helps the readers better understand the mental states of the 2. In terms of motivations, they are both also quite similar, they have different overall goals, however these 2 goals are similar in the way that they both have a deep desire to escape the harsh realities of war due to their emotional vulnerability. Supporting this thematic interpretation is in the dialogue is in act 2 scene 5 at the part where Anna and Tomas are at their “base”, they both have a huge argument, and Anna is on the verge of tears (this also ties in with the characteristics), and then this time Tomas tells a story to Anna instead of the other way
For example, in the beginning, the seemingly utopian relationship between Gene and Phineas showed how they are both good characters at heart. There was little to no conflict between the two, and there were no unfriendly feelings between them. However, as the story progresses, the reader sees how this relationship falls into decline, as Gene goes from being amiable to unstable and paranoid, while Finny is unfalteringly friendly. For example, as Gene and Phineas are getting ready to sleep at the beach, Phineas says to Gene, "You are [my best pal]." (41) Gene thinks about returning the compliment, but he does not.
Chapter 4 of the book We the People talks about Civil Liberties, this chapter mainly talks about the Rights that were placed in the Constitution (not in the Bill of Rights), it also talks about the Bill of Rights and it describes the rights protected by the Bill of Rights. It also talks about specific rights that work close together with the Bill of Rights and Amendments rights. One of the first Amendments that is described in great detail is Freedom of Speech and Religion. The first Amendment protects US citizens right to talk about almost any topic in the United States. I said almost any topic because there are some forms of speech that aren’t protected by the First Amendment (these forms of speech can be limited or prohibited), some of the forms of speech that aren’t protected by the First Amendment are Fighting Words and Hate Speech, Student Speech, Libel and Slander speech.
But through it all, they managed to remain close and get over their differences in order to build a stronger relationship. While the story was full of emotional ups and downs, there was a certain point that confirmed to the reader the solidity of their relationship.
