Survival is one of the most important aspects of life. In the book The War of The World’s by HG Wells, people on Earth are being invaded by Aliens from Mars. The atmosphere of war affects everyone, both mentally and physically. Dead bodies are strewn across the streets of London, while the Military loses more and more people. During evacuations, people shove each other, trampling each other to death escaping. Some people may say that this book is false because most governments practice mass evacuations. However, this will all change when a weapon is pointed at someone or if you see people dying all around you. This book, The War of The Worlds, shows that war can affect everyone both physically and mentally. Through indirect characterization, we can see that the unnamed main character is bent on surviving and seeing his family again. The martians are cruel and unforgiving to the humans, slaughtering everyone they see. Men, women, children, soldiers, are all seen as targets (Wells 71). The Martian’s advance from the town of Woking and defeat unit after unit of soldiers and destroying everything that got in their way. At first, the people in London had no fear, for they were sure the military could defeat the Martians before the martians could reach London.
