I have recently read a short story by George Saunders “The Wavemaker Falters” A novel with short stories told on a future America a land of corporate, violence, death and pollution. The narrator in counters many mixed feelings. The protagonists of Saunders' in the story emotions Suppress by the narrator anger towards Leon as well hard pressed with the guilt of killing the young boy by technical carelessness In The Wavemaker Falters the story is told and an experience of guilt, death, sympathy, betrayal and death. As the narrator feels guilt for being responsible for the death of a young boy named Clive. Simone His wife, losing patience and sympathy cheats on him with the park’s supervisor Leon. The person who constantly reminds him of his guilt by asking him not to feel guilty which instead of being of any help simply served to add fuel to the fire (38). The narrator shows extreme cupidity with Simone's happiness. He goes to Leon's office and waits for Simon to come out ‘flushed and happy'. “He wants to jumps out and confront her but he doesn't” (42). Even when he gathers courage to confront his wife regarding her affair with Leon; he is put down by Simone who openly accepted her affections for Leon. Clive’s father tells him “I don’t hate you but I can’t have you living on this earth while my son isn’t’ (44) Clive’s father tries to get revenge for his son death but doesn’t kill him. This shows that the father forgave him for the death of his son as he walks away the narrator waiting for his death says “I close my eyes and wait then I urinate himself”(44) and he finds out that Clive’s father had left. He left maybe because he forgave him for what happen to his son which related to the narrator wanting for forgiveness who gets it from not Clive but from his father which is why he didn’t get killed. As the story comes to an end the narrator goes for a walk ends up at the graveyard and just sits there and starts to think about what he has done his cheating wife having lost what he lost he says “what was lost my torn and black heart rebels enough is enough” is a way the narrator tells himself it is time to move on and make a better new
