In the article “Introducing Greg Abbott’s ‘Texas Plan,’ the Best Plan for Your Crumbling Way of Life,” Patrick Michels summarizes a speech done by Gregg Abbott at the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s annual policy summit. Due to the fact that Abbott believes that the three branches have strayed from their original constitutional design and that the government is not responsive to the need of the American people, he proposed the “Texas Plan.” Which is 92 pages long and contains both, Federalist and Anti-Federalist ideas. Furthermore, it has nine propositions to amend the U.S. Constitution for the 28th time. The whole purpose is to recreate America the way it was created and to repair the damage done to our government.
In her speech, Elizabeth Glaser convinces people and leaders in America that they need to acknowledge and respect the real dangers of AIDS and the victims that have it. Glaser effectively uses ethos, repetition, and tone to convey this message to the audience. Elizabeth Glaser, the woman who brought awareness of AIDS, takes a stance based on her own experience with AIDS. In order to help the audience to believe her, at the beginning of her speech, Glaser tells the audience that she “Had unknowingly passed it to [her] daughter, Ariel, through [her] breast milk, and [her] son, Jake, in utero”. In order to build Elizabeth Glaser’s ethos, Glaser talks about how she and her children aren’t the “typical” or “expected” people to contract AIDS.
K. Alexander Ashe, with her article titled “Yes. Education System Overhaul should Include New Emphasis on Financial Literacy” provides a better argument to support personal finance classes for all compared to “No. Better We Get Back to Basics” written by Wayne Madsen. First off, Ashe attempts to persuade the reader by making his writing seem credible and trustworthy.
For my book talk, I read a realistic fiction novel called Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. Miranda Evans lives with her family in Pennsylvania. She attends eleventh grade at her high school, and is also a part of her local swimming team. Her life is normal until the moon is knocked closer to the earth by a meteorite. The coastlines are under water and the weather is abnormally cold.
Summary: We are all Completely Beside Ourselves The story “We are all Completely beside ourselves” by Karen Joy Fowler is a unique one. Starting at the middle of Rosemary’s story you learn about the life of a broken family and an incomplete girl trying to find herself using her past. Her brother Lowell who always disappeared, her sister Fern who went missing, and her neglectful parents who brought work into their lives too often. The beginning is set in 1996 at the University of California, Davis.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was still widely believed only minorities (including homosexuals and people of color) could be infected with the AIDS virus. Elizabeth Glaser makes it clear that race and sexuality have nothing to do with your risk of contracting AIDS. She also addresses the reality of America unfair against these minorities: “poor people, gay people, people of color”. Glaser uses parallel structure to emphasize that minorities are highly discriminated against in society and it needs to change. It also adds to the overall message that everyone is at risk for AIDS.

In the reading by Peter Redman, he raises the argument that the ‘AIDS carrier” becomes the central representation of the HIV epidemic and how the representations of HIV cannot be narrowed down to one cause. In addition, the ‘AIDS carrier’ is represented as monster and the carrier spreads HIV from the deviant subpopulations to the mainstream. Also, AIDS has been connected to social and moral issues and singles out groups like gay men, black people, and young single women. These groups are then viewed as diseased subpopulations and that causes others to feel disgust and panic. The heterosexual men are then afraid to have physical or emotional contact with men in general and that’s why boundaries of heterosexual masculinity were produced.

In 2002 a film titled Bowling for Columbine was released by Michael Moore, a well-known satirist and filmmaker. The film received the Academy Award for Best Documentary feature in 2003 as well as international awards. The film depicts America’s fascination with guns through a montage played to the Beatles’ “Happiness is a Warm Gun” and then presents the destructions caused from gun violence throughout the film. Thousands of people die each year due to gun violence. Many people blame the lack of gun control, musicians, video games and anger.
She states that, “AIDS is the third leading killer of young adult Americans today,” and “two hundred thousand Americans are dead or dying,” which illustrates the heart-throbbing truth of this disastrous disease. The AIDS epidemic began in the 1980’s and the effects of it were seen all around the globe. Each country led their own unique approach to preventing and curing AIDS, and some strategies worked better than others. The Australian response to AIDS can be considered world leading due to their multifaceted approach against the disease. Australia was successful in educating all people while simultaneously researching ways to cure the disease. Australia made a concerted effort to fight the both the physical disease itself, as well as the social stigma associated with it.
People usually turn a blind eye on whatever they find troublesome as if the problem would go away. Mary Fisher wants people to stop their ignorance and prejudice. She wants them to realize AIDS is spreading and affecting many individuals. It can infect anyone at anytime; everyone is at risk. From the voice of one who knows the struggle all too well, political activist and author Mary Fisher, wrote the speech “A Whisper of AIDS”, presented at a Republican National Convention in 1992. In which she argues that AIDS should not identify a person, nor allow them to be hindered from experiences in their lives, which the Republican party can assist with. Fisher adopts a serious, compassionate tone in order to appeal to those infected with AIDS and their families. Fisher effectively convinces her audience that AIDS does not define a person and that these people deserve protection from society through the use of metaphors, meaningless words, emotional appeals and statistics.
In her essay “In defence of the iGeneration,” Renee Wilson argues that today’s technology has benefitted not only the students, but also the generation as a whole. The advancement in technology allows for change, innovation and creativity that result in one of the best generations yet. Although Wilson generalizes today’s iGeneration, she succeeds in providing a compelling argument. Much of her argument is supported by scientific evidence and personal experiences that demonstrate the ability of the iGeneration to accept change and provide self-actualization. Wilson’s use of generalizations reveals a degree of disconnect between the current iGeneration and previous generations.
