Apathy is a trait that makes people have lack of concern, enthusiasm, or interest. People seem to be less apathetic towards people they do not know. While most everyone feels a sense of civic duty towards a probable cause, others turn their cheeks and keep walking. The people in the story “Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn’t Call The Police” showed no sympathy towards Miss Genovese as her assailant was stabbing her. This story shows how people may see a situation but not have any apathy towards the cause so they keep walking or ignore the problem until it goes away. At one point an officer asked a married couple why they had not called the police and the wife replied with a simple, “I do not know”(Gansbergs 131). This a good example of how people do not show apathy towards one another in hard situations. Many of the people there that night replied with messily replies of why they did not call the cops; one man said he did not call the cops because he was tired and wanted to go back to bed (Gansbergs 131). Because of their actions, Miss Genovese had no chance at living. If one person would have called the police sooner she might would have lived.
