In the book, Unbound by Ann E. Burg takes place in the 1860's just before the Civil War in 1861. However, the book focuses on the Grace and her family being slaves for Master Allen and the Missus. As well as all the steps they took to get to their freedom in the swamp. However, throughout the book they ongoing theme of regardless of race, we are all human is very significant.
