Richard Rohr’s essay, Utterly Humbled by Mystery, speaks of his uncertainty and finding comfort in mystery as it pertains to God and Christianity. Throughout his essay he inspires people to follow his lead and accept his claim that religion is founded on people accepting the unknown and mystery that evolves around God. Inspiration can be discovered by learning to understand the mysteries Rohr speaks of. Rohr’s message about his beliefs pertaining to God and the mystery that evolves around God is a powerful message. Rohr warns against “quid pro quo universe.” God is perceived as an all-knowing God, he knows things the human mind could never comprehend. I believe the all-knowing God and the mysteries evolving around him is one of the mysteries that Rohr refers to in his essay. What is the meaning of life? Why do innocent people have to suffer? For example, refugees, starving children in Africa, or children in abusive families. Is God really punishing people for some unseen human fault? T Will God accept people that are practicing other religions but are sincere in their beliefs? Nevertheless, I believe there is convincing evidence of the existence of God or a higher power. The complexity of the planet in which we live, the designer had to be perfect. The same could be said about the existence of water, life on our planet would not exist without it. I often look within myself and wonder how it is we seemed to be born with some recognition of the difference between right and wrong. Who gave us a conscience? Some biochemists and mathematicians are even baffled and are not completely convinced that life evolved naturally. If that is the circumstance, then how did life evolve? Lastly, answered prayers and miracles, it would be hard to contend that these simply do not
