As a human, our first reaction to something new is being curious. We can't really handle this instinct, it's just normal for us humans. In the short story “Zebra” by Chaim Potok, Zebra makes a new friend from Vietnam. This friendship started with a simple question asked from Zebra to John Wilson. The question blossomed the friendship as they continued to talk back and forth. Many people think that it might be weird to talk to strangers, but how do people really expect to make friends without talking to other people and expressing themselves to them. Like most people, everyone has that one friend that is curious to find out the story behind your first friendship. Many people probably started their friendship because of them or a friendly person that was curious about wanting to play with them or asking them if they wanted to be their friend. After they had their conversation, John Wilson asked Zebra where principal's office was so he can host an art class over summer for the kids that don't have anything to do. On page 52, the principle accepted John Wilson's idea and now, over the summer, he has his own art class for the kids. John Wilson then invites zebra to his art class and accepts his offer. They both accept each other and show a strong act of kindness and friendship in this part of the story.
Over the summer, Zebra had participated in John Wilson's art class. He had been preventing himself from asking him what has happened to his arm. He eventually asked him on page 52. During art class, he asked John Wilson and a sad story was behind that question. He had lost his arm and his best friend in the Vietnam war.
