Faith Heathcote Period 7 November 5, 2015 We have studied three stories: the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, Freak the Mighty, a novel, by Rodman Philbrick, and Simon Birch, a film, by Mark Johnson. These three stories are conveyed through very different forms, but they share many character traits, literary devices, and themes. Doodle, Kevin and Simon all have disabilities. This makes life a challenge for them, but they each have a special friend to help.

In times of fear and hysteria in the U.S. it is mass chaos and it only gets worse and worse. During the time of both the witch-hunt eras, whether for communist or actual witches, they prove to have many similarities between them. Both of these times were full of confusion and lying which lead to the temporary downfall of the authority at that time. Joseph McCarthy proved to be a factor in this time and add on to the chaos that was America. Arthur Miller wrote about these times in a book called The Crucible, based on the witch trial era.
Therefore, Tommy Wiseau is placed to be the main character that drives the stories in the book because the readers are entertained by his strangeness. The audience influences how the book is written. By reading a memoir like this closely, we will see that the authors’ rhetorical choice reflects what appeals the readers and what the society values during that time. Furthermore, analyzing the text would give us an opportunity to explore and learn more the social and cultural context within a specific time frame that are sometimes hidden inside
In the novel,” The Pigman” by Paul Zindel, two teenagers named John and Lorraine befriend the Pigman. Near the end, the Pigman suddenly passes away. Even though numerous things contributed to Mr. Pignati’s death, the stress of John & Lorraine’s party and Bobo the monkey’s death played the biggest part. John and Lorraine threw a party while Mr. Pignati was at the hospital, but near the end, Mr. Pignati unexpectedly arrived back home.
For my book report I read the book The Pigman by Paul Zindel. The book is about two sophomores named John and Lorraine who befriend a man named Angelo Pignati over the phone while they were prank calling random strangers with two friends from school. Each chapter of the book is written in the perspective of either John or Lorraine and they are telling the story on a school typewriter in their library. John started out in the first chapter and Lorraine took the second then John took the third and it went back and forth from there. The reason Mr.Pignati is dialed was very specific rather than random.
Often, exaggerated stories perpetuated by society have a more profound effect on the listeners than a relation of actual facts. Stories are more compelling and powerful when the teller does not limit themselves to perfect accuracy. In “Sweetheart,” O’Brien states that Rat Kiley exaggerates his stories to “heat up the truth, to make it burn so hot that you would feel exactly what he felt” (56 pdf). Rat understands that to convey the truth of his story, he had to evoke an emotional response, and for Rat, “facts were formed by sensation, not the other way around” (56). As third-party listeners, we often insufficiently imagine what the storyteller may have been through.
Piggy the Great Why fit in when born to stand out? Not in piggy’s situation. Being a little bit different is always a good thing, but Piggy was not happy with this grace. Piggy faced lots of abuse, due to the over protection that was given to by family members, but not parents. Living without parents would not help a child grow normally, because parents are a grace given by God to children.
The constant interference of the two narrators creates ongoing disruptions of the story. In this short story by Kenan, the old man that is telling the story about the history of the town is kept being interrupted by a woman; contradicting the main storyteller, the old man, credibility of the story. The argument whether the main storyteller is telling the history of Tim Creek is being manipulated into what the old man wants the story to be like, or it is the truth. The prime example of this is when the boy, who is listening and learning the stories about his own town, told by an old man, is infatuated by the history. However, the woman kept interrupting the old man from telling the story saying “No such man ever exist” as the man was telling

That being said, John’s public confession, palpably exposed through material (a piece of paper with letters on it) would not only be etched on people’s memories and perceptions of him, thereby indelibly stigmatizing his good name, but also ultimately splinter his conscience and self-esteem. Having found again faith in his self-worth, through his conversation with Elizabeth and his refusal to name his friends’ names, John, stimulated to affirm his organic moral capacity, John stands up for his own truth, and that of others. He refuses to totally degrade himself and eliminate his rightful self-worth by giving “such a lie” to “dogs” and having his confession used as proof for the court’s legitimacy, to symbolically concede alliance or confirmation to this murderous court that he has been complicit in through his acts, and to deviate from his responsibility to show moral support to the truth and correctness of those who have hanged and are about to hang. While John’s expression of the aforesaid points can be misconstrued as a desire to preserve his self-image intact, or that it is reputation-conscious, that is not entirely
Eventually, we realize that the woman in the wallpaper is the narrator. Throughout the story, the narrator 's mental state continues to deteriorate. Being both the narrator 's husband and physician, John assumes that he knows what’s best for his wife. However, in this essay, I will argue that Gilman portrays John as an antagonist or “villain” in her story because, through his actions, he is the main reason for his wife 's descent into insanity which proves that he didn’t know what was best for his wife after all.
