The writing style that Sherman Alexie has written this text in, is colloquial because he uses a lot of slang and in a way, speaks to the reader. For example, in the quotes “Ain’t that weird?” (188) and “I had some pride, you know?” (168), he uses slang by saying “Ain’t,” instead of saying “Isn’t” or “is that not” and he seems to speak to the reader by questioning the reader. In addition, the novel is written in a funny style with short sentence structure. As well, when he talks about feeling’s, he does not showcase them in a poetic or dramatic way, instead he uses short and genuine words, which allow the feelings to seem more real. Therefore, considering the genre of this book, young adult fiction, Alexie’s writing style has a significant impact on the reader because it creates a strong connection with the young readers and makes them more engaged with his writing.
