I agreed with, because I witness it. Residents (society) do the bare minimal to help the victim. A man called down,” Leave that girl alone” (Gansberg 680).The man does not do anything after that. In Barbara Lazear Ascher’s essay “On Compassion” she analyzes the idea of compassion primarily through the way society treats the homeless/less fortunate. Using anecdotal narratives and rhetorical questions, she contemplates on the true motives behind compassion and encourages her audience to ponder on this same situation. * Ascher begins her essay with an anecdote about a homeless man approaching a mother and her baby using eloquent, high-level language. What happened that they ended living on the streets? ... When I decided to major in Social Work I had a passion to learn, help and work with the homeless. But, then I realize that is not only “helping” it’s providing them with the proper resources that they need assistance with and also making sure they want the assistance. Many of the homeless who live in the street suffer from addictions and mental disorders which can probably be one of the reasons why is somewhat difficult to help them.
The Bystander Effect: A Result of a Human Drive Repetitive cries and screams for help were heard in Kew Gardens, New York on the Friday night of March 13th in 1964. As the 28-year-old Kitty Genovese was approaching her doorstep, an attacker –Winston Moseley- came from behind and started to stab her repeatedly. Despite her loud calls for help, turning on the bedroom lights along the neighborhood is all what her calls were capable of. None of the thirty nearby neighbors wanted to go under the spotlight of answering the call of duty so it wasn’t before 20 minutes when the anonymous hero that lived next door decided to call the police. It was four years later when our victim’s story became the perfect example to explain the social psychological
