Summary: The Glade Runner

Thomas is a boy in a new world he does not know. He is unfortunate enough to wake up in a strange place called “The Glade”. He remembers nothing and must learn to survive. In this journal I will be predicting if Thomas will be a runner, questioning what the purpose of the Glade is, and evaluating Gally’s hate for Thomas. I predict that Thomas will become a runner because of the fortitude he showed in the Maze with Minho. Thomas was fast as a rabbit in the Maze and performed great. Ever since Thomas arrived, he wanted to be a runner. He finally gets his chance after he jumps into the Maze to help Minho and Alby. Thomas’s instincts are perfect and he helps the runners survive the Maze. Minho is extremely impressed with him after his actions. “I nominate this shank to replace me as Keeper of the Runners” (Dashner 158). What is the Glade? I think the Glade is a type of prison. He doesn’t think Thomas is who he claims to be. “The Greanbean who think’s he friggin’ God. Don’t forget I’ve seen you before-I’ve been through the Changing. What these guys decide doesn’t mean jack” (Dashner 163). Gally has a strong belief after Thomas arrives that he is going to adulterate their situation in the Glade. He keeps reiterating how he has seen him when he went through the Changing. Every time Gally sees Thomas he gives him a “wow-I’m-going-to-strangle-you” look. Gally even goes so far as to threaten to kill Thomas, saying “Whatever you came here for-I swear on my life I’m gonna stop it. Kill you if I have to” (Dashner 163). Thomas might have to watch his back a bit closer now… Thomas may or may not become a runner, but either way will have Gally at his neck, all while trying to find the purpose of the Glade. Thomas is just another mystery added to the Maze, and he must figure out why. This new life is dangerous and full of secrets, and it is up to Thomas and the Gladers to discover what lies
