The importance of a consistent patriarchal influence in Classical Empires is shown in most religious doctrines, family life and political authority, however unlike other civilizations, Ancient Persian afforded women many more rights. Ancient Persia exhibited a somewhat patriarchal society through religious beliefs and but also showed gender equality through ideals taught by a higher power. In ancient Persia, even though political power was mostly held in the authority of men, women contributed greatly towards the power and freedom of the empire. Many aspects of family life were dominated by a masculine influence, while women committed to the well being of the family. Persian women enjoyed power, influence, and economic opportunities. But, not all women enjoyed the same status and power in Ancient Persia. Royal women certainly enjoyed more influence than non-royal women. In art, we can see royal women depicted almost identically to men with similar clothes, hairstyles and poses, so we can infer that they enjoyed many of the same rights and privileges as men. In a time where women were considered much less than in other parts of the world, royal Persian women were clearly considered equal. This shows the influence that royal women had on society, through political power. Another example of women holding political power is an example of the actual life royal women would live. Royal women could hold their own councils and advise the king. They also took part in royal banquets, and traveled with the King even on military campaigns. Throughout Persian history, a royal women was considered as high as the king, the highest of all. Sometimes, the king’s mother was considered the highest in the empire, at certain eras. This goes to show, the equality and power that women held in politics. It shows that during a time where many women in the world were deprived of basic rights, others had the ability to enjoy political freedom and were respected with power.
