Part One Self-assessment is an important aspect of expanding leadership qualities (Hurley & Shumway, 2015). When one takes the times to reflect on themselves and their own leadership style, they are able to learn ways in which to change or improve current behaviors. When one takes time to evaluate their leadership style they are able to assess how they dictate tasks, promote team work, how they motivate others and also their own confidence levels and how approachable they are and willingness to work as a team.

An example of this situation for me was a moment I was a charge nurse and my unit had to move to a new location. This was a stressful time, setting up a new unit, still caring for patients and managing a unit. I was very fortunate to have a team full of nurses that were willing to travel these waters with me. We were able to move supplies and patients to the new location. My job was to give directives regarding the plan and assist were needed to make the move happen effectively and efficiently. An example I have for this is when I had worked on a step down unit for almost a year. The acting manager (also my mentor) insisted that I complete critical care classes and move to the ICU. She is the one that trained me when I first started on the unit. She provided me with the skills I needed to perform well on the step down unit and then pushed me to go further and take on new challenges.
