Summary: The Most Widely Accepted Extinction Theory

182 Words1 Pages
The most widely- accepted extinction theory is that a meteorite hit Earth and caused the dinosaurs to go extinct (“First Dinosaur Encyclopedia” 114,115). Without evidence of a crater, the theory couldn’t have been established (“Thomas Sumner: What Killed the…”). Luckily,
Geologists discovered remains of a huge crater in Mexico during the 1990s (“First Dinosaur
Encyclopedia” 114,115). In fact, there was another way scientists could prove their theory about the extinction was correct. It involves the K-T boundary. Iridium was found in samples from the
K-T boundary, which marks the division between the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods
(“Extinction”). Iridium happens to be uncommon in the Earth’s crust, but profuse in meteorites.
