Superman Smashes the Klan Analysis
Have you ever had trouble fitting in? Well, don’t give up! Superman Smashes the Klan is a great comic that displays this problem and shows you can always overcome your problems. This Comic was about the Lee family and Superman, the Lees were discriminated against to fit in and wanted them to change what they go by and what language they speak (even in their own home). And throughout the Comic Roberta and Superman struggle with their sense of belonging, where they ‘fit in’. And they find what they are looking for friends, support, and family by being who they really are. The theme of Superman Smashes the Klan is “Don’t change yourself because of others”. This is because he’s scared that people are going to see him differently. But when he finally uses his full potential, and after some time others accept him and treat him fairly. On page 183 (section 3), Roberta confronts Superman about not using his full potential/powers. Saying that he wants to seem like a better version of a human, running faster, jumping higher, and that he’s afraid that he will be seen as an alien and won’t be called superman, but super something else. And this is the truth as superman runs off quickly and we have had other dialogue that confirms this. Superman didn't want to seem inhuman for the fear they would treat him differently, at worse scared of him. He fears that he would be seen as of they knew he wasn’t human. On page 211 (section 3), Superman had just used powers no one knew he had, you can see that everyone is freaking out and distressed. Superman looks disappointed and on the verge of tears. When he realizes Louis is still there he becomes more confident and ready, a small smile appearing on his face. Through this panel we see Superman's face and overcome one of his fear, using and showing the world he is more than just a superhuman but an alien. When he sees that Lois still believes and is there for him he realizes he doesn’t have to hide and change because of others’ opinions.
