Could you imagine being kidnapped and sold into slavery? In the 1500s during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade being kidnapped and sold as a slave was a common occurrence in Africa. Throughout this period of time, Europeans would come to Africa in search of a source of labor, slaves, to send to work on their plantations. In exchange for slaves, African people would receive manufactured goods from the Europeans. The process of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade was a maniac and unsafe affair.
By 1600, Portugal, Great Britain, France, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, and North America were all shipping Africans away from their homeland to work as slaves in European countries (Young, 2011). Although this was not the first known instances of human trafficking, it is noted as the most organized, intentional persecution of a specific population. It wasn’t until 1865 that slavery was made illegal in the United States. However, human trafficking continued to persist in various ways. In 1902, the focus on human trafficking seemed to turn from the African population to white women and girls.
The course of Native African’s history has been marked by deadly wars, spreads of mortal diseases, massive droughts, food and water scarcities, but there is one tragedy that rises above all of them: slavery (involuntary human servitude). During the 15th to the 19th century massive slave trades took place across the Atlantic Ocean, from Africa to the Caribbean, North and South America.
