Survival and Loyalty The word survival means: “the act or fact of surviving, especially under adverse or unusual circumstances.” Many people rely on their faith to help them with survival as well as many other things. The word loyalty means: “Faithfulness to commitments or obligations.” Although some may disagree, the need for survival, physical or emotional, can outweigh loyalty. For some strange reason, people go through things that are usually unexplainable. One of the most important things, to many people, is protecting their family members and in order to do so, they must think more about their loyalty than their own survival. This book is a great story about a man who struggles to survive in Alaska and eventually dies from poison which was from potatoes that he collected. His last note before he died was, “‘S.O.S. I NEED YOUR HELP. I AM INJURED, NEAR DEATH, AND TOO WEAK TO HIKE OUT OF HERE.I AM ALL ALONE, THIS IS NO JOKE. IN THE NAME OF GOD, PLEASE REMAIN TO SAVE ME. I AM OUT COLLECTING BERRIES CLOSE BY AND SHALL RETURN THIS EVENING. THANK YOU, CHRIS MCCANDLESS. AUGUST?’” (PG 12) This quote relates to the statement because Chris was so focused on surviving that he wasn’t loyal to his real wishes which were surviving off the land, and proving a point. Instead of Chris proving a point, nature decided to prove a point to Chris. Many people would choose surviving over being loyal to their dreams. It’s almost Chris broke his loyalty with nature by choosing to survive using the new technologies instead of surviving off the land.
