Chapter 2 - Nice to Eat with You: Acts of Communion Choose a meal from a literary work and apply the ideas of Chapter 2 to this literary depiction Answer: Quentin Tarantino’s films are all known for having significant meal scenes, and Pulp Fiction is no exception. In Pulp Fiction, many memorable scenes involve food. Although, the meal scene that sticks out the most is the one between Mia Wallace, Marsellus’s wife, and Vincent Vega, Marsellus’s bodyguard. Even though the characters come from two different worlds they share something in common.
In order to survive, people will do things they wouldn’t normally do or will go to great lengths to do what is necessary to. People will do anything to save themselves rather than trying to save others. Also, things that people will do is they will try to harm you or kill you to survive. People really do take these things serious and you never know how far you are willing to go until you are actually put in that situation. People will do anything to save themselves rather than trying to save everybody else.
The boys that crash landed on the desolate island in “The Lord of the Flies” were very unique. Yes, they all had their similarities, but most of them had very contrasting appeals and ideas. For example, Jack and Ralph were very opposed to each other. Jack wanted to do nothing but hunt and have a blast. Ralph took a more sensible approach and stuck with the basics.
In a life-or-death situation, it is most important to have mental strength because of logical conclusions, prior survival knowledge, and leadership. Having these allows you to make choices that are smarter and allow you to get things done faster. Also, having that leadership skill allows you to lead others and have confidence in darker times. Having prior survival skills can help you know how to do something more , too. For example, in the text The Seventh Man by Haruki Murakami, the author states that “I didn’t run.
Informative Essay The Lord Of The Flies is a great book filled with events that have hidden messages. There are many allegorical connections that you can make in these hidden messages or symbols. The literary term allegory means a representative of an abstract or spiritual meaning through concrete or material forms. The most important symbols that make up an allegory in this book are piggy's glasses, the island, the beast, the adults and the conch. All the symbols in this story signify the world and Golding tries to find a way to compare or relate it to the real world.
Throughout life, people often lose track of what is really meaningful and important. In Lord of The Flies by William Golding, this element of human nature is portrayed through the children’s failure to complete necessary tasks due to their inclination on the island. It is simply human nature to fulfill desires before priorities. When the children first arrive on the island, the priority is to “be rescued” (37). The group decides that the best way to fulfill this is to build and maintain a signal fire (38).
When these characters are faced with challenging dilemmas they choose to either sacrifice their lives or avoid doing the right thing in order to save
“Inside each of us, there is the seed of both good and evil. It’s a constant struggle as to which one will win. And one cannot exist without the other.” As Eric Burdon said, we have the potential of both good and evil, but it isn’t fixed at birth. People cannot be born with a bad heart, they do not start on the “ the dark side” so to say.
Some say that true character is revealed in the face of adversity. In Lord of the Flies the young boys in the story face adversity and find their true character. Kids crash land on a deserted island without adults. They work hard to survive and to be rescued. Parts of the group disagree and Ralph and Jack, the two main characters, form their own groups.
Authority keeps a society in order with little to no consequences. Without proper authority and social order a society can have a bad downfall. With a downfall, major problems could occur such as mixed social order, looting, and false voices. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies symbolism is used to articulate the theme of The downfall of a society without consequences through the symbols of conch shell, the fire, and the Lord of the Flies. The conch was chosen as a symbol of reasoning and order.
James McBride in The Color of Water and William Golding in The Lord of the Flies convey the intent that adversity helps one grow through the use of the literary techniques of external conflict and character development. Throughout McBride and Golding’s texts, main characters grow through adversity found in the form of external conflict. James in The Color of Water struggles with his life as he searches for his individual identity. One summer in Louisville, Kentucky, he ignores his intellects and associates with unhealthy role models.
Do humans have strong primal instincts that are hidden by society? In the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of boys ranging from very young to about thirteen or fourteen, survive a plane crash on to an uninhabited tropical island. The story goes through their experiences with ‘beasts’ and learning how to hunt with the materials on the island. They struggle with building shelters and keeping a strong connection with each other as many of the older kids break off from the group. When the boys arrive on the island, they corporate well, but the longer they remain, they revert to old ways of living, showing how living away from society can revert you to the darker side of human nature.
To approach a neoteric condition, one must abandon one’s original position; whether such an endeavor to alter one’s state is to be termed progression or retrogression is entirely a matter of perspective. Simply put, the departure from one’s locality and the arrival at one’s destination are two sides of the same proverbial coin. Such was understood by William Golding and was consequently exemplified in Lord Of The Flies. The novel explores a journey of the human condition from the comfortable shadow of civilization into the blinding veracity of reality, with the end result often being considered representative of humanity’s nethermost manner of existence. However, such is a subjective deliberation, which was evidently understood by Golding;
For example, during “The 1972 Andes Flight Disaster,” some of the people that survived only did it by “collectively making a decision to eat flesh from the bodies of their dead comrades, beginning with the pilot” (CommonLit staff 7) If some people wouldn 't have done this, everyone would have died and that would make this horrifying tragedy even worse than it was. According to the story, Is Survival Selfish?, “Self- preservation is supposedly an instinct” (Wallace 317).
