In Tim O’Brien’s story “Notes,” he discusses his fellow soldier “Norman Bowker […] [who hung] himself in the locker room of the YMCA” (149). Bowker symbolizes the pain that many veterans experienced, and how they sadly found their only escape through suicide. Yet, veterans potentially could have survived and even thrived if they had access to resources such as therapy, psychiatrists, and psychologists. When organizations supporting the idea that veterans should have opportunity to obtain these assets proposed this concept to The House Committee members, “members repeatedly balked at the notion that Vietnam Veterans required special counseling programs to help readjust” (Scott 38).

A Place to Stand In Chapter 2 of his memoir, poet and author Jimmy Santiago Baca recounts about being thirteen years old the first time he was incarcerated. He was made ward of the court and placed in a boys detention center for running away from the orphanage on various occasions. During his stay in the detention center, he was around other chicano boys who concealed their fears and suffering with a defiant pride, they taught him how to fight and intimidate others. The director of the facility decided to give him the opportunity to attend a local high school where he met the school’s football coach, and soon after joined the football team.
After many failed attempts to get her life back together, she finally received the help she deserved from the very beginning. Ms. Burton started working and saving money and was able to start the New Way of Life Re-Entry Project, which helps women who are released from prison get their children back and their lives on track. Then, the floor was opened for attendees to ask questions. Many expressed their gratitude to Ms. Burton for visiting our campus and asked questions regarding potential solutions to the issues faced by women who have been incarcerated. Ms. Burton read part of her book and continued to talk about her work.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, there are currently over 2.2 million individuals serving time in federal and state prison, with 95 percent of those individuals being released and returning to their perspective communities across the nation. But that’s not always true, for example searching for love, accomplishments, and new ideas could also be a search. In the book Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell, Marcus has some of these internal searches. As I watched the documentary “Road Beyond Abuse,” I experienced a whirlwind of emotions. From disgusted and disappointed to impressed and joyful, I felt it all. It truly disturbed me to hear about the experiences both Michael McCain and Johnnetta McSwain endured. I was disgusted that no one protected these innocent children from being verbally abused, beaten, raped, and left to fend for themselves. It was shocking to hear that these children withstood this amount of abuse from their family members until they were teenagers.
In the article “Shitty First Drafts” by Anne Lemott she discusses how every writer has difficulty putting their ideas on paper because writing should be seen as a process that even the best and famous writers follow. She also talks about how even the best writers don’t just come with ideas and just begin writing on paper and make it as their final draft. Lemott also points out the importance of being able to just write down every thought into the first draft regardless of the structure of the draft and how it makes it easier to start the second draft. In her TED talk called “The danger of a single story” Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, speaks about the negative effects, single stories can have on a certain people. A single story is created when the same discourse is being repeated over an over again in books, TV shows or in the news. The single story creates a stereotypical, one sided perception of a group of people. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie tells a story about how she, came to believe a single story in her childhood. When she was a child she read many American and English books, about people, with whom she had very little in common.
You brought up a subject that does not get enough attention as it deserves- the affect of incarceration on families. There is always lots of discussion and debate in the media about crime, victims of crime, police, and prisons. I do not think we hear nearly enough about the detrimental affect that incarceration has on families and communities. These effects can be great and long-lasting. Like you mentioned, one negative result is the loss of income from a missing, incarcerated parent.

Jamie Woodlief LIT 165 February 23, 2018 Kate Chopin and Adrienne Rich: Freedom Versus Oppression and Gender Struggle “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” by Adrienne Rich are works based on the main idea of the plight of women in a male-dominated world in their respective time periods and their struggle to get their freedom. They were written during a time when women were controlled by some male authority figure through every stage of their life, starting from their father at birth and eventually by their husbands after their marriage. Although they are essentially based on the same theme, the portrayal of the theme is different in both. While Chopin’s short story gives a woman hope to be free from the confinement of her marriage, Rich’s poem shows a woman dreaming about the freedom she knows she will never get, through the tigers in her tapestry.
We are the products of our surroundings. If certain people or things are placed and our surroundings the adult life or a human can be changed drastically. I feel the inmate was just in his letter, and I agree with every word written within it. The inmate 's mother is just as reasonable for the inmate 's imprisonment as he is. I truly believe the way we are raising impact what we become in the future.

At Ted Global 2009, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a Nigerian novelist, expresses her view of single stories and the ways in which they are used to create stereotypes and divides us as a people. Adichie’s talk, “The Danger of a Single Story”, stimulates careful consideration to what happens when people and situations are reduced to a single narrative. She believes single stories are highly correlated with the power structures of the world and have the ability to strip people of their humanity.
Many people who take trips to other countries use it to escape the boredom of their own life and to have fun in another country. Taking vacations can provide excitement when heading to different locales, give a person the tastes and sights of a new place, and overall provide a sense of pleasure to a tourist. However, there is an aspect of this that many tourists do not get to see. In her essay A Small Place, author Jamaica Kincaid makes this aspect very clear. Kincaid, along with many other natives of foreign islands, believes that tourists are “ugly human being[s]” who seemingly feed off the boredom and desperation of the natives of a certain place, creating a source of pleasure for themselves (Kincaid 262).
The story “Yours” by Mary Robinson is a short story about a married couple spending their Halloween evening together before the death of his young wife. His wife was suffering from cancer. The story starts with Allison, the wife, coming in from getting pumpkins for the evening events with her husband. She walks through their home where she finds the mail. She finds a letter from her husband’s relatives who saying awful things.
