Under Armour Under Armour is an American sports wear company that was founded in 1996 by Kevin Plank. The owner himself was a former American Football player that initially started his company under his grandmother’s basement. The apparel Plank developed was his first prototyped microfiber shirt, which Under Armour is well known of, that he ingeniously made when he found out that his compression shorts stayed dry after his game, unlike the soaking wet shirt he wore under his jersey. Running up and down the east coast, Plank eventually hit a major sale with a few football team and the opened a contract deal. He then sold $17,000 worth of apparel at the end of 1996 and had $100,000 orders to fill which then he found a factory in Ohio to make the shirts. The rapid growth of Under Armour was in 1999, when the company was contacted by Warner Brothers to have Under Armour outfits on their upcoming films. Using the investment he made off the first film, Plank purchased an advertisement in a magazine, which generated a close $750,000 in sales. On that year, plank finally put himself on the payroll nine years after starting the company. In 2003, Under Armour launched its first television commercial with their motto “Protect this house” and finally opened its first retail, which is located at the Westfield Annapolis mall.
