Humans rarely change their ways; they stay in their own worlds and always interact with the same types of people. Unfortunately, this habit often creates unseen barriers that divide and alienate human beings from one another. In Luis Alberto Urrea’s book The Devil’s Highway, Urrea provides a personal perspective to immigration by telling the story of 26 illegal immigrants, known as the Wellton 26, who are abandoned as they cross the Mexico-U.S. border. Through their story, Urrea proves there are invisible borders among people that create prejudice, such as language, ethnicity, and economic status. By reading The Devil’s Highway, it is clear that these barriers must be broken down to ensure harmony within society.
Culture is something that is important to everyone. When a person goes from one place to another, the shock of the different culture can be considerably large on a person’s character and their identity as a whole. In Into the Beautiful North, Urrea illuminates cultural collision and its affect on character’s sense of identity through Nayeli’s naivety and her reaction towards how America truly is throughout her journey. Nayeli’s naivety really stems from her home of Tres Camarones.
Jane Harrison’s “Becoming Kirrali Lewis” explores the difficulty of identity, belonging, and one’s understanding of themselves through the eyes of an Aboriginal girl discovering life as an independent college student, and her search for her biological family. Throughout her novel, Jane Harrison employs numerous narrative and/or rhetorical devices that would be effective in a personal essay. Firstly, the novel contains several examples of symbolism, adding depth and meaning to the story. One of the most prominent and powerful symbols in the novel is the gate.

Modernity has been mainly characterized by its imperialistic policies and colonizing endeavors, which while creating the current legal organization of the world have largely marginalized the many indigenous groups who originally occupied the conquered lands (Andrews and Walton 600). Although post-modern societies have seen an increase in the awareness of these matters, American-Canadian author Thomas King has dedicated his work to throwing light on issues still not tackled. In his short story “Borders”, King tells the adventure of a Blackfoot mother and her child, who try to cross the border to the U.S. but refuse to declare their nationality. It is through his masterful choice of narrator and the careful depiction of the mother’s struggle to maintain her Blackfoot identity that the author conveys the many difficulties First Nations face in their effort to keep their heritages alive.

In Thomas King’s short story, “Borders”, he writes about the Canada-America border. Within the short story, the main character refuses to identify her citizenship even though she is from Blackfoot. Even though the story is being told through the young boy’s point of view, the main issue focuses on another character, the mother. When approached by guards on the border, the mother insists that she is a Blackfoot, which causes issues because her son is a minor and must stay on the Canadian side of the border.

In her essay, “More than Just a Shrine: Paying Homage to the Ghosts of Ellis Island,” author Mary Gordon argues that a separation exists between the descendents of early American settlers and the descendents of later immigrants. Through reflecting on her experience at Ellis Island, Gordon demonstrates her connection to the Americans who passed through as opposed to those who influenced immigration policies. Gordon provides examples of how those already in America affected how Ellis Island received foreigners. Even at the beginning, New Yorkers and officials fought over where to locate the immigration center without distracting from their new Statue of Liberty.
The poet, Lascelles Abercrombie once said, “There is only one thing which can master the perplexed stuff of epic material into unity; and that is, an ability to see in particular human experience some significant symbolism of man 's general destiny.”. He talked about how powerful of a tool symbolism is and how it is the only thing that can truly define a highly complex ‘destiny’ or series of events. Symbolism is something that is found throughout Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee shows the reader that racism is a product of society,she portrays the matter through her symbolism of the mad dog, the birds and the bugs.
There wasn’t just real borders in the novel but there were borders in people’s minds. They didn’t want to think differently than what they already thought. Their racist ways made it to where the immigrants were always the ones to be blamed. This caused for several different types of borders to be depicted throughout the novel. “I told you – he was Mexican” (Boyle 15).

How do the texts use symbols to develop an individual’s role in society? In A Quilt of a Country, Anna Quindlen used a quilt as a symbol, in Once Upon a Time, Nadine Gordimer used the parents as a symbol, and in the Gettysburg Address, the symbol used by Abraham Lincoln were the soldiers who fought for our nation; these symbols help the reader understand the Man vs. Society conflict.
