In Billie’s Lett’s The Honk and Holler Opening Soon, Caney’s café is mistakenly named The Honk and Holler Opening Soon. However, the mistake on the sign of the café symbolizes the beginning of new possibilities for the characters in the novel as well as how the characters grow throughout the novel. Caney has been emotionally “closed” since opening the café as exemplified through him not venturing outside of the café for twelve years. However, Caney begins to emotionally “open up” to Vena Takes Horse during the first half of the novel. Furthermore, Caney also “opens up” by venturing outside of the café and taking a horse ride with Vena.
In a book “Among the Hidden” by Margaret Peterson Haddix, symbolism is used to create a powerful feeling with a place or thing. For example, Luke (the main protagonist) was "... always safe and protected by the house and the barn and the woods. Until they took the woods away." (pg. 11) The woods were Luke’s playground where he didn’t have to worry about being seen, his only safeguard and protection from the Population Police.
Many books can convey an underlying idea by using different means to do so. Symbolism using motifs is an example of a literary element an author could use to represent the story. In Maximum Ride: School’s Out Forever by James Patterson, wings could be used as symbolism to represent the plot of the story and hidden messages that can apply to the plot of the book as well. Firstly, the wings can be used to describe the characters’ escape from Itex.
The imagery of the first poem greatly contrasts from the overall tone. In “A Barred Owl,” Richard Wilbur describes an owl frightening a child and waking her from her slumber. Wilbur sets the scene with dark imagery: “The warping night air brought the boom/ Of an owl’s voice into her darkened
Another example of usage of symbolism in this book would be Alcohol. Alcohol is used as a symbol to convey a deeper meaning. Alcohol in this novel symbolizes that many of the characters face problems and obstacles that are very difficult, but they don’t really face them head-on. They try to escape from their problems in many ways, and the main one is alcohol. The characters are having tough times in their lives, where they really don’t know what to do and how to handle their obstacles or setbacks to be happy.

Symbolism allows the author to create a story that would otherwise be bland and monotone. Without this dark romantic element, books, short stories, and poems would not have as much meaning nor appealing detail. Symbolism in "The Raven," "The Devil and Tom Walker," and "The Minister's Black Veil," creates layers of meaning and interesting characters. Symbolism has been used for centuries to spice up the literary world. Sometimes it is used in obvious ways, but other time it has to be thoroughly studied to be imperturbably understood.
Germany provoked the United States, which eventually made U.S enter World War I, also known as the Great War. After World War ended in 1918, Wilson proposed (which was eventually passed internationally) the Treaty of Versailles, mainly punishing Germany and preventing it from causing future wars. The United States entered war, which made it official that they were, once again, involved with foreign affairs, disregarding Washington’s advice to not be involved with other countries. “The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible” (Washington). However, once Word War I was over, the “public opinion favored a return to
Symbolism is a standout amongst the most vital scholarly terms utilized frequently by numerous authors to pass on their focal thought. As indicated by the Longman Contemporary Dictionary, Symbolism can be characterized as a gadget that brings out more than an exacting importance from a man, question, picture or word. On the other hand, in “The History Teacher”, the students, incredulous of their prevaricating teacher, mock his spurious teachings. In the first stanza of “A Barred Owl”, the poem begins with a dark, ominous, “warping night air” sweeping into the child’s room, which “brought the boom, of an Owl’s voice into her darkened room.”
The first literary element that plays a significantly important role in this story is symbolism. The most prominent example is involving Phoenix’s name. A literary symbol is usually defined as something to signify ideas and/or meaning by giving a symbolic meaning, contradicting or being different from the literal meaning. Usually these types of symbols are used to develop a more deep, and significant meaning. Just as a cathedral's literal meaning is to offer a place for the religious to worship, the narrator’s drawing of a cathedral has opened a door for him into a deeper place in his own world where he can see beyond what is immediately visible to him; Breaking free from the monotony of his every day life, and what he lacks to see and embrace because of
Symbolism can use an object (like a tree of birds), or art, (like Melinda’s art project or Mr. Freeman's canvas) to represent an abstract idea. Laurie Halse Anderson uses symbolism to hint at a certain mood or emotion, rather than just blatantly saying it. So, the use of symbolism is important because it helps create meaning and emotion in a story. Symbolism makes a book fun to read, the symbolism produces a thought provoking work of art and it, (like in this book), adds meaning to seemingly unrelated objects and elicits emotions in the
