“A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. Don’t make no difference who the guy is, long’s he’s with you. I tell ya. ”(Steinbeck, page 73).
Symbolism helps to make a deeper meaning of objects that can be so simple
Literary devices establish a foundation for authors to set forth a message that recurs within a passage of text. In Bernard MacLavertys’ “Secrets”, literary devices adequately convey the central theme. Throughout the story, the prominent theme that disloyalty engenders lasting guilt toward one's relationship is enhanced through symbolism. MacLaverty illustrates symbolism through wilting irises, to portray the loss of trust between Aunt Mary and her nephew. As the nephew sits in Aunt Mary’s sitting room, his gaze narrows to the oval table, the story states, “On the table was a cut-glass vase of irises, dying because she had been in bed for over a week.
The symbol that is being shown here is the fence, which divides the people by race. This is shown when the text articulates, “That summer the fence that stretched through our town seemed bigger. … White people lived on the other. And Mama said, "Don't climb over that fence when you play." She said it wasn't safe.”
Michael Valderrama Hodgins AM Studies Block A 12/5/16 Gatsby’s Mansion Symbolism is the use of symbols to supply things with a representative meaning or to represent something abstract by using an existing object. Gatsby’s mansion is a symbol of himself, his love for Daisy, and a representation of the 1920s. James Gatz, the small town boy from North Dakota, dreamed of obtaining his American Dream. He perceived the American Dream as a way to obtain wealth and status in order to win the hand of the love of his life Daisy.
John Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath, illuminates the despairing and depressing conditions the American farm families in Oklahoma had to go through during the Dust Bowl era from late 1920’s to early 1930’s. The novel depicts Steinbeck’s fanaticism of the land, hatred towards the corporeality, and his belief that people can survive the cruel influence of their surroundings. Steinbeck accomplishes the following by illustrating the life of the Joad as well as by using various types of symbolisms throughout his novel. According to Oxford Dictionaries, “a symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something else, especially a material object representing something abstract.” The three symbols in Steinbeck’s novel include the dust, the

Yet, he does not always achieve to overcome the problems and insults reasoned by his origins, also owing to many assaulting symbols and ideas which still continue to exist in society although the central character lives in an age more than eighty-five years after the end of slavery. However, the Invisible Man must find himself, his honor and his self-regard, in order to find the way to his ancestry and his race. Not only does he constantly come across prejudiced and narrow-minded people but he also gets in contact with images and symbols that mock and insult him as well as dispraise his race in general.
Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities of something or someone in a situation. Katniss was presented as the girl who was on fire, a symbol for the rebellion in the 12 districts to defy the rule of the Capitol. Symbolism is shown throughout the story and in our everyday lives, for example, flags of each country symbolize their unity and loyalty to their homeland. It's something that represents something bigger than yourself, it can let you feel hope when there is none. A couple of years ago an event occurred with one of my family members in the Philippines, it made me feel very upset and I started to feel isolated.
Symbolism in general is the building blocks to all sources of literature and can shape a piece of writing in many ways. Symbols in general can portray what something or someone represents, giving a deeper and metaphorical meaning to a symbol. Symbolism is often used within poetry, literature, music, or even art. This is how an author conveys a different meaning to the audience. For example artists may use the color “red” not only because of the color theory, but to convey love, passion, and maybe even health.
The “Symbols” of Amontillado Symbols can tell a story in a deeper sense of detail through characters, setting, and even their environment. Objects, characters, or their emotions can give valuable information; information that lets the reader know about what might happen further in the story. Edgar Allen Poe’s, “The Cask of Amontillado” has many different kinds of symbols tell how unfortunate Fortunato is by his own Name his friend Montresors name, and the Coat of Arms in the cellar. To start off, Fortunato’s name is a symbol in itself because of what kind of character he is. His name has the key word “fortune” and his name also means lucky in Italian, which means that the character Fortunato should be a lucky person.
Symbolism is when the author uses objects to add deeper meaning to the story without mentioning it in the story. In Flannery O’Connor’s story, “Good Country People”, she uses symbolism to illustrate the antagonist and protagonist with more insight; for example, Manley’s hollow Bible signify how he really does not believe in Christianity, Hulga’s wooden leg portrayed her personality, and her name change represents how she is not the same girl she once was. First of all, the author introduces Manley Pointer as a young man that goes around homes selling Bibles, but little did she know that was not the case. When Manley Pointer goes on a date with Hulga the truth is revealed. Hulga has the impression that Manley is a young nice man that sells Bibles
Symbolism can use an object (like a tree of birds), or art, (like Melinda’s art project or Mr. Freeman's canvas) to represent an abstract idea. Laurie Halse Anderson uses symbolism to hint at a certain mood or emotion, rather than just blatantly saying it. So, the use of symbolism is important because it helps create meaning and emotion in a story. Symbolism makes a book fun to read, the symbolism produces a thought provoking work of art and it, (like in this book), adds meaning to seemingly unrelated objects and elicits emotions in the

Symbolism is, “the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character.” A great example of symbolism is when Bunyan says, “Now, a little before it was Day, good Christian, as one half amazed, brake out in this passionate speech; What a Fool, quoth he, am I, thus to lie in a stinking dungeon, when I may as well walk at liberty? I have a key in my bosom, called Promise, that will I am persuaded open any lock in Doubting-Castle. The said Hopeful, That’s good news, good brother, pluck it out of thy bosom and try” (Bunyan, The pilgrims progress 135) This is when Christian and hopeful are trapped in a dungeon of a castle and they remember that they have a key that can get them out that is called the promise.
Symbolism is a key item or idea that ends up going beyond the meaning of itself. Symbols are everywhere ranging from a flag, animals, colors, and flowers. In the book “Animal Farm” by George Orwell it seems that the whole farm is full of symbols and they all seem to symbolize the ideal society going into ruins. One reason the farm represents the idea society that is going into ruins is because of how some particular animals better themselves from the other animals. By making rules for the animals to live by made the animals equal, “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others” (Orwell 133).
