Books are considered illegal and banned because they make people think and question. I feel sympathy for Montag as his wife does not have any emotional attachment to him as she only care about her “family” on the parlor walls and betrayed Montag by reporting to the firemen that he has books in his possession. Montag also faces numbers of obstacles in his journey for self-identity. Fahrenheit 451 shares many similarities of the setting in the novel The Giver.
The book Fahrenheit 451 is about a man named Guy Montag. Montag works for the Firehouse as a Fireman, but Fahrenheit 451 is set in the future. A future where Firemen do not put out fires, instead they start them. These firemen set ablaze to only books. They set fire to books because they are wrong, evil, and corruptive.

In the beginning, the main idea is that the firemen are saying that their job is rightly justified. In the middle of the book, curiosity fills the mind of the main character Guy Montag; which leads to the conclusion of the book where Montag reaches enlightenment. In the novel, Montag experiences many changes in his perspective on the fate of books. Characters such as Clarisse, Beatty, Faber and Granger contribute to Montag’s journey of transitioning from ignorance to enlightenment.

Montag has finally realized that books are not just fairy tales that were once made by lunatics, but they were made by people like him, who spent their whole lives creating something beautiful; only for him to come and destroy a lifetime of thoughts and observations. This makes him not only self aware, but also makes him fully understand the importance of books and trying to understand them. Overall, it may be said that Mrs. Blake is the last piece of the puzzle for Montag to become fully self aware and to understand the true importance of understanding books and their true purpose. Fahrenheit 451 shows a dystopic world where book burning is the way of limiting imagination and depth of thought. Resistance is shown in Fahrenheit 451 when Montag hides books in his house. When Beatty finds out about the books and burns down Montag’s house, Montag goes on the run and him and Faber decide together what to do from this point onwards. “I feel alive for the first time in years… I feel I’m doing what I should have done a lifetime ago.”

Events that caused a change in Montag’s personality was when he first talked with Clarisse, when he saw Mildred attempting suicide, when he stole a book while burning a house, when Montag goes to see Faber, and when Montag sees a woman kill herself along with her books.

This is until the day he meets Clarisse, who looks at the world in a different way than anyone else. Then, shortly after, he has to burn down a house full of books and burn the woman inside also because she refuses to leave. This causes Montag to realize that books should not be burned and have great significance in the world. He then shows his wife the abundance of books that he has collected from his job, and his wife, Mildred, becomes concerned. This later causes her to make up lies to cover the fact that Montag is breaking the law of owning books.
