Symbolism (noun) the particular idea or quality that is expressed by a symbol. Many symbols existed in J.D. Salinger’s novel, The Catcher in the Rye, and the film Into the Wild. Both Holden Caulfield (The Catcher in the Rye) and Chris “Supertramp” McCandless (Into the Wild) have many of the same perspectives on life and an analogous life story which may show that they have similar symbols. For instance, the two men run away from home and are timid and apprehensive about forming close relationships. On the other hand, Holden has the philosophy that children must stay innocent as he wants to catch them running through the rye.

A symbol is defined as “something that stands for or suggests something else by reason of relationship, association, convention, or accidental resemblance” by the Merriam Webster dictionary. In literature, it can be either universal or personal or both in a number of different ways. In order to understand the relationship between universal and personal symbols, we need to know their distinct features. Universal symbols have a previously defined meaning, agreed upon by the majority of people across cultures, they usually refer to concepts more universal than the physical aspect itself. Some examples are: spring symbols for a new beginning, the sun stands for power and warmth, the signs for a woman with skirt tells bathrooms.
Symbolism can use an object (like a tree of birds), or art, (like Melinda’s art project or Mr. Freeman's canvas) to represent an abstract idea. Laurie Halse Anderson uses symbolism to hint at a certain mood or emotion, rather than just blatantly saying it. So, the use of symbolism is important because it helps create meaning and emotion in a story. Symbolism makes a book fun to read, the symbolism produces a thought provoking work of art and it, (like in this book), adds meaning to seemingly unrelated objects and elicits emotions in the
George R.R. Martin once said, “There is a savage beast in every man, and when you hand that man a sword or spear and send him forth to war, the beast stirs.” This is significant because it fully depicts the conflict that occurs in the novel between the boys. A symbol is used to represent something as it has relevance to context. Symbols give deeper meaning or extend feeling to an actual word beyond what is being said. The use of symbols can be very helpful in bringing more change of conveyance in a piece of literature.
