Symbolism can awe readers in various ways. It can put ideas into words, creating something that seems so simple into something incredibly significant. One novel incorporating many symbols is To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This mind-gripping novel is set in Macomb, Alabama during the heart-wrenching times of the Great Depression. Without Boo, Jem and Scout would probably be dead, casting tragedy on many people. Even though Boo was gossiped about and had spiteful lies spread about him, that did not stop him from saving two special lives and even saving the town from Bob Ewell's abominable actions. To continue, flowers form a sense of tranquility and beauty in Maycomb. In the novel, two characters in particular show a deep passion for these beautifully structured plants. One of these characters is Maudie Atkinson. Miss Maudie is an open-minded, compassionate person and always magnifies hard situations, maintaining peace and security. Her garden, as explained by Scout and Jem, serves as a safe sanctuary. At Miss Maudie’s house, Scout and Jem always seem to have a calm sense of humor about them. “Jem and I have always enjoyed the free run in Miss Maudie’s yard.” (47).
