On Page 109-110, Drummond talks about a wooden horse from when he was little. He talks about what happens to it and says, “All shine, and no substance! [Turning to Cates] Bert, whenever you see something bright, shining, perfect-seeming—all gold, with purple spots—look behind the paint! And if it’s a lie—show it up for what it really is!” Mr. Drummond is basically saying that in life when you look past all of the beauty and colors of the best things in it what you find is not what you were expecting. The authors of Inherit the Wind, Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee use symbolism to make you understand that Mr. Brady seems so colorful and good on the outside but in the inside there is another part to him. The quote happens near the end of the play and Mr. Drummond says it because he started talking about how he feels like a racehorse and how he keeps running and ending up back where he started. Also like his wooden horse it looked so perfect but in reality it was a mess. The quote relates to this because of how all of these big names and famous people seem so nice, but yet there is another side to them. Some of the people accused of sexual harassment is unbelievable because of who they are, you would think that they would never do something like this but it just shows how sometimes people aren’t who we think they are. Maybe some of the allegation are just people wanting to get attention but most of them are not and it is awful to think that these beloved people could do such awful things. The lesson from the quote applies to this because the people being accused of sexual harassment seem to be so perfect in a way that is imaginable, and it is because they are not what they seem to
