Sarah Jewett was able to enlighten her readers with limited characters with unique personalities in “A White Heron.” The story portrays youthful courage, heroism, and that a promise essentially means a promise. “A White Heron,” symbolizes Slyvy’s dedication and connection to nature. Slyvia has a special connection and love for nature that she never knew she had. Slyvy is a basically a city girl and her grandmother has taken her under her wing because the city was becoming too busy, so her grandmother moved her out to the country where life is much slower. Due to being in the city, Slyvy is shy and afraid to talk to people. So, one day she ventured out into the wilderness and finds a newfound love in Heron which starts to change her from shy
