In this story, the author uses symbolism to create a deeper thought. For example, the drumsticks that the drummer boy (Joby) used is a symbol that the author incorporated. In lines 40-41, Joby said “...I only got a drum, two sticks to beat it, and no shield.” This symbol is connected to the battle because he used them to keep the rhythm during the fight.
After analyzing “On the Rainy Road” through an archetypal lens, it is clear that the symbols effectively indicate that going to war was a terrible decision. To start, Tim’s archetypal character showed that he was not emotionally ready to go to war. For instance, when Tim was trying to decide if he should go to war or run away to Canada, he had flashbacks described as follows, “I saw a seven-year-old boy in a white cowboy hat… I saw a sixteen-year-old kid decked out for his first prom, looking spiffy in a white tux,” (O’Brien). Tim imagined the colour white which is the archetypal colour for purity and innocence, showing he represents the divine child archetype.

Although the majority of authors desire this immersion, communicating their stories is not ordinarily their only objective. Many novelists covet the notion of allowing their readers to discover a deeper meaning within their passages. Most notably, authors achieve this through implementation of literary constructs such as symbolism and allegory. One instance in which the audience is cognizant to such literary constructs is through Bobbie Ann Mason 's short story, "Shiloh".
Throughout these five chapters Tim O’Brien use symbolism to shows meaning indirectly, so the reader can use their mind to figure it out. The one symbol that stood out to me is from the chapter “Style” where a girl continue to dance without paying attention to her surround. There isn’t specific lines that show symbolism which mean that the entire chapter help shows the symbolism. The meaning of the symbolism from this chapter of why the girl is always dancing after her family died is that war is hopeless and meaningless where there is no point of fight because most of the time there’s no winner.
Bobbie Ann Mason’s short story Shiloh is a story explaining the events leading up to a husband and wife’s marriage coming to an end. This couple rushed into marriage because they had a baby on the way, but four months after the baby was born it died of sudden infant death syndrome. In this story Norma Jean ,the wife, is the breadwinner of the family while her husband Leroy stays at home because of an injury he sustained at work. Both Leroy and Norma Jean fail to confront the issues they are having, and because of this, the bond between them grows weaker the longer they are together. Their marriage is bound to end at some point.

In Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, a main theme would be greed and selfishness brought on by cultural and economic pressures. The Grapes of Wrath is set in the dust bowl era and depicts a time period in which jobs were scarce and homelessness was prominent. The story is centered around the Joads family who are forced off their land due to the money hungry businessmen. In addition, one of the men driving a tractor for the land owners happens to be a former tenant farmer. When asked by the Joad’s family why one of their own is working for the banks the driver explains, “I got damn sick of creeping for my dinner- and not getting it.
