Albeit General Robert E. Lee wore red and Private Buster Kilrain wore blue, these two men were quite similar in several ways. Each soldier was a leader in a war that they chose to fight in, in order to uphold and defend their respective ideologies. Despite those ideologies being opposite, each felt theirs was superior and in turn was willing to sacrifice his life to protect it and the way of life it afforded. Buster Kilrain and Robert E. Lee were very close in age, Kilrain at the ripe old age of fifty-one and Lee at the slightly riper age of fifty-seven.
He lets this Captain know that the doctor told him he was not fit for military service. He also mentions how he thinks he 's not strong enough, but will try to get into service in a couple weeks if he gets a bit stronger. This letter lets me know that for the civil war you had to be tough in a way. If you weren 't strong enough there was no way you would make it. 2.)

Imagine if you are a teenager, marching into a battle with no armor, no weapons, and no ways of self-defense. The novella Generals Die in Bed was written by Charles Yale Harrison who was born in Philadelphia and raised in Montreal. Harrison fought in World War 1 with the Canadian army and later became a writer in New York City. Generals Die in Bed is a fictional novella based on Harrison’s personal experience with the army that mostly takes place in France from the early part of the war until 1918. The story follows a private throughout his time on active duty that offers a brutally honest depiction of the war trenches during World War 1. As the novella progresses, we gradually see the narrator’s growing hatred for war.
In the short story “On the Rainy River” by Tim O’Brien, the main character Tim O’Brien gets a letter notifying him that he has been selected for the draft; he is affected by this emotionally, physically, and he faces a moral dilemma because this war goes against what he believes in. Immediately upon receiving the letter O’Brien thinks, “I was too good for this war. Too smart, too compassionate, too everything. It couldn’t happen. I was above it” (1003).
In the short story, “The Man I Killed,” O’Brien focuses on this to show that everyone fighting in a war has a story. He spends the story describing the man he killed and searching for justification of his actions. He carries around guilt with him because of it, and his fellow soldiers try to help him justify and come to terms with his action by saying things like, “You want to trade places with him? Turn it all upside down= you want that? I mean, be honest,” (126) and “Tim, it’s a war.

Instead of listening to the experience of his peer, General Lee allowed complacency to misguide his judgement and he ordered an attack of dubious success. General Edward Porter Alexander, then a colonel in charge giving General Pickett the signal to charge, also recounts his hesitancy towards the questionable orders, stating in his autobiography, “But when I looked at the full development of the enemy’s batteries and knew that his infantry was generally protected from our fire by stone walls… I could not bring myself to give the word” (Alexander 468). Many of the officers in Lee’s army were able to forsee that Pickett’s Charge would be unsuccessful. Consequently, this further places the responsibility of the call on Lee, as he, the General of the Army, was not able to predict what his subordinates were. These concerns were also voiced directly to Lee.
Communication is needed in any relationship whether it be romantic or platonic. Without communication, a relationship will inevitably collapse. Written by Bobbie Ann Mason, “Shiloh” depicts the troubled marriage of Leroy and Norma Jean Moffitt, a couple whose relationship collapses due to a lack of communication. Leroy and Norma Jean are two contrasting characters who fail to resolve their differences through communication, creating tension between the two and leading to their ultimate divorce. Through the characterization of Leroy and Norma Jean and the depiction of a conflict between two spouses, Bobbie Ann Mason stresses that communication is key.
As the author is told he is being drafted to war, he becomes very upset. He clearly does not want to be part of it. His initial says, “I was too good for this war. Too smart, too compassionate, too everything. It couldn’t happen.
“How to Tell a True War Story” and “Ambush” are stories that both explore on topics: truth, the real definition of a true war story, and the role of truth. O 'Brien starts off “How to Tell a True War Story” with “This is true.” Starting this story with such a bold sentence not only makes it seem more true, but to some extent, it acts as a comfort statement to the narrator’s own doubts, as if there were unspeakable uncertainties and lies of the narrator. The title of this story also comes into play, with a meta-fictional name “How to Tell a True War Story”, as if it were a guide, a manual, having a true war story tell the readers how to tell a true war story. However ironically, towards the middle of the story, us as
“At that time, it was the bloodiest battle in American History. ”(Bradbury 167) In, “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” by Ray Bradbury, Joby, the drummer boy, wants to be more than just a drummer boy. He wants to be a soldier. The general talks to Joby saying “you are the heart of the army.”
