The Confederate troops were on the Virginia side of the Potomac River, while the Union troops were on the Maryland side. There were shortages of boats to cross the river, only made apparent in the midst of the battle, and morale was low since the loss of Wilson’s Creek in August. In the end, overall Union casualties to include killed, wounded, and missing, were 900, while the numbers for the Confederate Army was approximately 200. Troop organization for both the Confederate and Union Armies were congruent with the organization at the time.

This shows just with one side of the United States how many people died in this “little” battle.
Based on the historical facts, Bradbury’s story “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” presents a believable portrait of a Civil War drummer boy. The characters, their role in battle, and the dangers they faced are some of the reasons why I believe the story is historically accurate. From a strategic point of view this battle was looked at as a Union victory for the simple fact that Lee had his men retreat. Leroy and Norma Jean are two contrasting characters who fail to resolve their differences through communication, creating tension between the two and leading to their ultimate divorce. Through the characterization of Leroy and Norma Jean and the depiction of a conflict between two spouses, Bobbie Ann Mason stresses that communication is key.
In the battle there were three main strikes, the morning attacks on the Confederate left flank, the second and most notable being at “Sunken Road”, and the final strike by General Ambrose E. Burnside which was destined to succeed until more Confederate troops came to push them back. The story The Drummer Boy of Shiloh is a historical fiction novel about someone named Joby and his experiences with the war as a drummer boy. Joby, the main character of the story, first develops mixed feelings about the upcoming battle, unaware of what could happen. However, once the story develops, Joby finally changes his feelings about the battle with outside help, he finally accepts his role as drummer boy, and he starts to gain confidence. At the beginning of the story, Joby is fearful and very anxious about anything that could come his way. This is proven when, in paragraph one of the story, it is stated that "like panic, which jerked the boy upright.
