The Hatchet represents everything Brian can do in the wilderness. It is sort of like a pocketknife because Brian uses it for so many things. The Hatchet is a tool originally used to chop down wood. Brain used it to make a fire, cut down wood, get food, make weapons, and protect himself. The hatchet is a useful tool to Brian, he made a spear wit the hatchet and is saving the Hatchet for something more important than hunting. The hatchet is made out of steel so when it strikes the black rock embedded in the cave it creates sparks. The Hatchet is significant to the story because Brian needs it to do almost everything. Fire has a lot of qualities that it shares with a home. In a home there is warmth and the fire gives off warmth. Homes also have light and, so does the fire. With the fire he can cook meals. Animals do not like fire and stay away from it, so with the fire Brian can be safe from animals. Fire is significant to the story because it is Brian's protection from wild animals. The cave represent a shelter, a place of safe keeping. Without the cave he would be cold when it rains. He would be sunburned and the cave solves that problem. Brian can have access to warmth in the winter and shade in the summer. He is storing stuff in the cave, like berries or eggs. With the cave and the fire Brian can be safe from the forces of nature. The cave significant in the story because the cave is where Brian is living. Brian's dream represents his brain trying to figure out how to make fire. The dream shows Brian's father starting a fire on the grill and Then Terry standing Brian's fathers place. Then he sees Brian and points to the fire to say hay, a fire! Brian did not listen and headed towards the grocery bag that he thought must have some sort of food in it. The Hatchet was a key to it all but Brian didn't know that yet. In part of the dream he did not understand was angry with Terry because he knew it was fire. The grocery bag is important because in the dream there was a grocery bag that Brian thought was full of food but you need a fire to make
