Station Eleven and I: What is Happiness? Happiness is being around your self-chosen family with a career in a profession that simultaneously gives you purpose and help improve our society. Brian Doyle, the author of “Joyas Voladoras,” passionately writes about hearts due to his own experiences with his son, who was born with only three chambers in his heart. In his short story, “Joyas Voladoras,” Doyle further discusses hearts and the symbolic meaning they possess. Through examples with hummingbirds, whales, and people, he is able to convey that feeling vulnerable is a part of life. He discusses vulnerability through multiple situations: how it exists while taking risks, how it exists while seeking companionship, and how it is exists due to harsh realities of the current world. In “Joyas Voladoras,” Doyle suggests that the heart is constantly in a state of vulnerability.
This is also present in the fact that she is detached from her family members. A black feather with white band is said to signify home, harmony and balance. All that she wishes to be surrounded by but isn’t. It’s not that she can’t have balance at all it’s that she never has enough time to bring it in to light. The feather is covering one of her eyes to convey that she is blinded by this dream of one day settling down in one place and bringing the whole family together.

The short story “Birthday Cake” by Katharine Brush the author reveals how the people you care about can hurt you the most. Brush uses symbolism to show how discontented the couple are with each other, she also uses imagery to show how unappreciative the man is towards his wife. On the birthday point there is only one candle, this candle signifies how lonely the husband feels, it also symbolizes how lonely and isolated the wife feels. The narrator tells us that the woman is wearing “a big hat,” her hat symbolizes her block vision on her husbands likes and dislikes.

Birthday Party by Katharine Brush can be categorized as an ambiguous short story. According to Webster’s Dictionary ambiguous means, “able to be understood in more than one way,” shows that Brush’s narrative can be taken as many different ways. In Brush’s short story she uses symbolism, point-of-view, and characterization to make the narrative one that leaves the reader trying to find the underline meaning of the text. Symbolism in the passage is used by the cake “with one pink candle burning in the center” (Brush 7). Brush uses the small candle to make the reader go into deep thought about what the candle really symbolizes.
