In the beginning of the story, the author uses a tree as an example of humanities fear of change. The next symbol used in the story is when the neighbor’s compared Mrs. Tall to a wine bottle and Mr. Short to a tin of pork. Another symbol used in the story is how the author uses Mrs. Tall’s accident to show how both of them love each other no matter the circumstances. Tall and Mr. Short to a wine bottle and a tin of pork. This symbolizes how people often insult what they don’t understand. The tailor’s wife didn’t understand how Mrs. Tall and Mr. Short could have ended up together. Therefore, she couldn’t understand why they loved each other even though they are so different. The tailor’s wife spent a large amount of time obsessing about trying to figure out how the nonconventional couple got together “Though the tailor’s wife was indefatigable she failed to discover how the incongruous couple who passed daily before her eyes had come to marry. She found this most frustrating; it posed a formidable challenge. On the basis of her experience, however, and by racking her brains she finally came up with a plausible explanation: either husband or wife must have some physiological deficiency.” She would continuously try to come up with reasons as to why the couple ended up together without considering that the height difference doesn’t bother them.
